Charter is a future of work media company founded by media executives and acquired by The San Francisco Standard in 2025. We are a media and insights company designed to transform every workplace. The world of business is at an inflection point, and Charter serves as a guide and vital partner to the people who want to take best advantage of this opportunity to catalyze change.

In support of our mission, we are seeking an AI & Work reporter to join our editorial team. The ideal candidate will have deep experience covering the intersection of artificial intelligence and the workplace—producing in-depth, practical journalism for a senior business audience—as well as a track record moderating and programming virtual and in-person events. You will report to the managing editor and play an important role in our coverage and events, working with team members who previously held senior roles at The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, Quartz, WIRED, and The Atlantic.

This reporting role leads our coverage of AI, one of the most consequential developments for work, workplaces, and leadership. We’re interested in what both companies and researchers are saying about its impact and how it's being used to transform work, with the goal of providing readers with high-value sensemaking and practices they can put to use. We expect this reporter to also work closely with the tech reporting team of The San Francisco Standard, Charter’s sister news organization, and some of their coverage will likely appear in The Standard as well.

The reporter will also be expected to develop relationships with leading AI executives, experts, and companies; evaluate and recruit them for potential speaking roles at our live events; and help design high-impact conversations that elicit practical, ideas-driven takeaways for our senior business audience.

Since its founding five years ago, Charter has established itself as the trusted reference for understanding how to navigate critical areas including AI and work, flexible working, and inclusion for the more than 100,000 executives and company decision makers who subscribe to our newsletter and participate in our events.

As a company that values diversity and inclusion, we encourage individuals of all backgrounds and experiences to apply for this position.

What you’ll do
  • Report and write for our email newsletter, website, research playbooks, and other offerings.
  • Produce online articles and newsletters.
  • Contribute to programming our live events, recruiting speakers and attendees, as well as acting as a moderator for discussions.
  • Participate in the further evolution of our culture, brand, and offerings.
Who you are
  • Experienced with tech and/or business and management coverage
  • Possessing great reporting skills and editorial judgment
  • Experienced with public speaking and moderating
  • Familiar with digital publishing, audience engagement, and social media platforms
  • Creative and organized
  • Low ego, high ambition
  • Passionate about transforming workplaces, with a desire to positively impact how work is done and people relate to one another.
Where you’ll work

Our strong preference is for this reporter to be based in The Standard’s San Francisco headquarters, which has an in-office policy.

Benefits & Perk
  • Competitive and equitable total compensation packages

Our values

Generosity—Our posture at all turns is one of generosity. We believe in treating each other, and anyone with whom we interact with openness, respect, and curiosity, and come from a position of trust, empathy, and collaboration. We believe in creating an environment where everyone can be their full selves, and in directly addressing bias and other obstacles to opportunity. We have zero tolerance for discrimination. Being generous includes embracing being part of a diverse team coming together to make a shared vision a reality—our aim is to be both low ego and high ambition.

ImpactOur work is propelled by the desire to positively impact how work is done and people relate to one another. This is founded in a moral conviction that all people deserve the opportunity to work with dignity, and a belief that a society where more people thrive at work is one where more people play active roles in their families and communities. Having an impact entails bringing our talents and passion to the work that we do—and striving to further the maximum positive change possible for any effort we put in.

Creativity—The systems under which we live and work are strained and broken—especially in the face of challenges like inequality and climate change—and fixing them requires us to abandon assumptions that business should be approached the way it always has been. We’re better served by pursuing boldness and creativity rather than sentimentality for how things have always been done. When at a fork in the road and we have conviction that the bold and creative path has greater potential, we should take it without hesitation.
