Why This Role Matters
The Washington Post is seeking an ambitious and forward-thinking reporter to cover the transformation of the technology industry in the age of artificial intelligence.
This is a high-impact role at the center of one of the most consequential shifts in business, technology and society. We’re looking for a journalist who can break news, deliver sharp analysis and produce ambitious enterprise on how the AI boom is reshaping Silicon Valley, global markets and everyday life. The beat spans powerful tech companies, cutting-edge research labs, venture capital and the broader ecosystem driving rapid innovation — as well as the societal, economic and ethical implications of this technological upheaval.
The ideal candidate has a strong network of sources across the AI landscape and the ability to see around corners — anticipating trends, identifying emerging power dynamics and delivering coverage that is both authoritative and accessible. This reporter should be equally comfortable explaining complex technologies and capturing the human stories behind them, translating a fast-moving and often opaque industry into compelling journalism for a broad audience.
This position is based in San Francisco, California.
You are driven to break news and uncover what’s really happening inside the AI boom.
You are fascinated by how technology reshapes industries, economies and human behavior.
You enjoy translating complex, technical topics into clear and engaging storytelling.
You are curious about power — who holds it, how it shifts and who is left out.
You thrive in a competitive, fast-moving environment and are eager to collaborate across teams.
Break news on major developments in artificial intelligence, including product launches, corporate strategy, research breakthroughs and investment trends.
Develop and maintain deep sourcing across AI companies, research institutions and the venture capital ecosystem.
Produce ambitious enterprise and analysis that examine how AI is reshaping the technology industry, labor markets, creative fields and global competition.
Identify emerging trends and anticipate where the industry is headed, delivering forward-looking coverage.
Explain complex technologies and concepts in accessible, engaging ways for a general-interest audience.
Report on the societal, ethical and economic implications of AI, including issues of power, accountability and impact.
Collaborate with colleagues across technology, business, economics and policy teams to produce comprehensive coverage.
Experiment with storytelling formats and approaches to make coverage as impactful and resonant as possible.
A proven track record of breaking news and producing impactful enterprise reporting on a competitive beat.
Strong source-building skills, with experience covering technology, venture capital or related industries.
Ability to understand and explain complex technical concepts clearly and accurately.
Demonstrated ability to anticipate trends and deliver forward-looking journalism.
Strong writing skills and the ability to work quickly under deadline pressure.
A collaborative mindset and experience working across teams to elevate coverage.
Interested candidates should upload a résumé, cover letter and three examples of their work (as PDFs) to our jobs portal by Apr. 1. The cover letter should be addressed to Tech and Media Editor Alexis Sobel Fitts, Deputy Futures Editor Juliet Eilperin and Futures Editor Zach Goldfarb.
The salary range for this position is $137,300 - $228,900. The actual starting salary within this range will depend on individual skills, experience and qualifications as they relate to specific job requirements.
