About the Role

Nabis is seeking an Associate Counsel to join our growing legal team and support the company's commercial, regulatory, and operational legal needs. Reporting to General Counsel, you'll serve as a trusted legal partner across the business — drafting and negotiating contracts, navigating cannabis compliance, and advising internal stakeholders on a wide range of legal matters.

This is a high-ownership role for a sharp, collaborative attorney who thrives in fast-paced, high-growth environments and is energized by the complexity and opportunity of the cannabis industry.

Responsibilities:

  • Advise on the full spectrum of employment law: hiring practices, terminations, performance management, accommodations, leaves of absence (CFRA, FMLA, PDL), wage and hour compliance, and workplace investigations.
  • Draft, review, and maintain employment policies and handbooks to ensure compliance with California and federal law, adapting them as the company grows and regulations evolve.
  • Manage pre-litigation employment disputes, including demand letters, agency charges (DFEH, EEOC, DLSE), and mediation—working closely with outside counsel when litigation arises.
  • Partner with People Operations to provide real-time counsel on sensitive employee relations issues, restructurings, and workforce planning.
  • Monitor and interpret legislative developments in California employment law (including wage orders, PAGA reform, pay transparency, and AI-in-hiring regulations) and translate them into actionable guidance.
  • Develop and deliver training programs for managers and HR on topics such as anti-harassment, wage and hour best practices, and leave administration.
  •  Support cross-functional legal projects including commercial contracts, regulatory filings, corporate transactions, and compliance initiatives—broadening your skillset over time.

Qualifications:

  • J.D. from an accredited law school and active bar admission (California preferred).
  • 2–5 years of legal experience at a law firm and/or in-house, ideally with exposure to commercial contracts and regulatory matters.
  • Experience in cannabis, alcohol & beverage, agriculture, logistics, or another regulated industry is a strong plus.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently manage multiple matters simultaneously with strong attention to detail.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills — able to translate complex legal concepts into clear, actionable guidance for non-lawyers.
  • High ownership mindset with a collaborative, business-enabling approach to legal work.
  • Comfort working in ambiguity and building structure in a rapidly evolving regulatory environment.
  • Why you'll love working at Nabis
  • Industry-defining work
  • Be part of the fastest-growing cannabis company in the U.S. — at the legal frontier of a nascent, high-stakes industry.

  • Fully remote, high-impact role with direct exposure to the business and broad legal scope from day one.
  • Competitive compensation
  • Salary commensurate with experience, plus medical, dental, vision, and 401k.
  • Flexibility & autonomy
  • Work where you do your best thinking, with a team that trusts you to get it done

Compensation & Benefits:

  • Unlimited PTO and paid holidays
  • Competitive salary: 125,00- 150,000
  • Additional compensation: bonus available, but dependent on job level
  • Medical/Dental/Vision offered to all full-time employees
