Outside is looking for a News Writer to support our mission of inspiring, informing, and engaging outdoor enthusiasts across a wide range of activities and interests. Put your passion for the outdoors, writing, and digital publishing in front of a vast community of adventure seekers, environmental advocates, and lifestyle readers. At Outside, you won’t just report on outdoor culture; you’ll help shape it.

Within 1 month, you will: 
  • Write 3 news stories per week: At its core, this is a news writing role, and you will be ready to hit the ground running. You’ll be expected to write short news hits with a combination of aggregated and original reporting. You’ll be working toward a cadence of 3-4 news stories per week in the coming months.
  • Onboard and Integrate: Work closely with the Outside editorial team, particularly the Adventure channel, to understand our content strategy, workflow, and brand voice.
  • Master WordPress: Develop fluency in our content management system.
  • Attend 3 News meetings per week.
  • Package stories for maximum reach: Apply core SEO, social, and news best practices to optimize headlines, intros, imagery, and metadata for maximum reach.
Within 6 months, you will: 
  • Actively pitch at the 3 weekly News meetings
  • Write 5+ news stories per week: A mix of aggregated and original reporting
  • Film on-site videos to accompany writing; work closely with the Video team to achieve quality content.
  • Copyedit and Fact-Check: Ensure high standards of accuracy and clarity through detailed editing and verification.
  • Engage with Trends: Monitor outdoor media and social platforms to spot emerging trends and story opportunities.
Within 12 months, you will: 
  • Edit and proofread content: Perform light- to medium-level edits for structure, style, and clarity on content from Outside contributors and staffers.
  • Contribute meaningfully to content planning, audience growth, and brand development discussions within the News space. This will mostly focus on the Adventure channel, but may reach outside of it from time to time.
  • Be a Brand Voice: Embody and promote Outside’s editorial values across all content, with possible appearances in social video/audio storytelling.
What YOU bring to Outside:  (Preferred Qualifications)
  • Strong journalistic instincts, solid reporting chops, healthy curiosity, and a firm understanding of the value of independent media.
  • A deep interest in the outdoor lifestyle—this could include hiking, camping, gear, environmental issues, travel, fitness, or adventure sports.
  • Ability to self-edit writing for content value, structure, and style; strong copyediting and fact-checking skills.
  • Ability to manage short-, medium-, and long-term projects simultaneously.  
  • Familiarity with WordPress or similar CMS.
  • Working knowledge of SEO and social media principles and best practices.
  • Strong writing and communication skills.
  • Passion for inspiring people to explore the outdoors and protect the places we play.

What We Offer:

Entirely remote jobs that could be performed in Colorado: Employees can expect to be paid a salary of between $50,000 - $60,000. Additional benefits include health care, vision, dental, retirement, Flexible Time Away, sick leave, and more. This salary range is merely an estimate and may vary based on an applicant’s location, market data/ranges, an applicant’s skills and prior relevant experience, certain degrees and certifications, and other relevant factors
