About Xaira Therapeutics

Xaira is an innovative biotech startup focused on leveraging AI to transform drug discovery and development. The company is leading the development of generative AI models to design protein and antibody therapeutics, enabling the creation of medicines against historically hard-to-drug molecular targets. It is also developing foundation models for biology and disease to enable better target elucidation and patient stratification. Collectively, these technologies aim to continually enable the identification of novel therapies and to improve success in drug development. Xaira is headquartered in the San Francisco Bay Area, Seattle, and London.

About the Role
We are seeking an Associate Scientist to join our High-Throughput (HTP) team to support the discovery and development of innovative protein therapeutics. This role focuses on the design and execution of HTP expression, purification, and characterization campaigns. You will work at the interface of biochemistry and automation, collaborating closely with our robotics and data teams to advance candidate molecules from in silico design to physical validation.

About You
The successful candidate works effectively both independently and as part of cross-functional teams. Experience collaborating with discovery, process development, and analytical departments is highly desirable. We require an adaptable scientist with strong communication skills and the ability to present data across team and departmental levels. You should excel in fast-paced environments, managing multiple responsibilities and shifting priorities. You are expected to work effectively both independently and as part of a team to drive complex projects forward. This is a hands-on role suited for a scientist who is passionate about advancing drug discovery and development through innovation and scientific rigor.

Key Responsibilities

  • High throughput protein expression, purification and characterization from multiple systems including cell free systems and mammalian is the primary responsibility.
  • Drive team throughput and data quality by developing novel strategies for parallel protein processing. Key responsibilities include optimizing expression and purification workflows and conducting quality control and functional assays for proteins used in therapeutic development and in silico design.
  • Excellent record keeping and organization is a must
  • The experience and flexibility to work on upstream medium scale expression and downstream purification is a plus.
  • Perform analytical characterization of purified proteins using HPLC, CE-SDS, and icIEF to ensure high-quality candidates for therapeutic development.

Qualifications

  • B.S. (6+ years) or M.S. (6+ years) in a relevant scientific discipline; industrial experience preferred. (PhD (2+ years)
  • Proven expertise in high-throughput (HTP) protein production, with a specific focus on cell-free protein expression (CFPE) and/or mammalian transient expression systems.
  • Understanding of the biophysics of protein-protein interactions, protein chemistry, experience in the molecular biology and biophysical techniques essential for protein work is required.
  • Demonstrated hands-on experience with high-throughput (96/384-well) expression and purification workflows.
  • Proven track record of independent project management and cross-functional collaboration.
  • Dedicated to inclusive leadership and maintaining a respectful, diverse team environment.

Compensation

We offer a competitive compensation and benefits package, seeking to provide an open, flexible, and friendly work environment to empower employees and provide them with a platform to develop their long-term careers. A Summary of Benefits is available for all applicants.
