Description:

Who we are:

The Gladstone Institutes is a leading independent, not-for-profit research organization dedicated to improving human health through groundbreaking biomedical research and education. Our work spans neuroscience, cardiovascular biology, immunology, and stem cell biology, with a strong emphasis on understanding and treating disease. With approximately 600 team members, including world-renowned scientists and biomedical leaders, Gladstone fosters a collaborative and innovative environment. Located at the Mission Bay Campus in a state-of-the-art facility, we offer competitive salaries, comprehensive benefits, and the resources to empower individuals to maximize their potential and make a meaningful impact on global health.

About the role:

The Gladstone Institutes is seeking an experienced and visionary Director for the Bioinformatics Core, a premier facility dedicated to advancing biomedical research through cutting-edge computational and statistical analysis. The Core provides professional services to researchers at Gladstone and UCSF, offering consulting, data analysis, software development, and pipeline implementation across a wide range of omics data types. The Director will also oversee Gladstone’s Data Science Training Program, which offers workshops throughout the year that help researchers gain new computational skills.

The Director will lead a team of bioinformatics professionals to deliver high-quality, impactful support to the research community while shaping the long-term strategy and sustainability of the Core. This role includes fostering collaborations, driving innovation, and ensuring excellence in both technical execution and user engagement.

What you will do:

  • Provide strategic direction, mentorship, and supervision for the Bioinformatics Core team.
  • Develop and execute a long-term vision for the Core that aligns with Gladstone’s research priorities.
  • Oversee staffing, recruitment, training, and professional development of Core members.
  • Manage budgets, cost-recovery models, and financial sustainability, including collaborative grant support and institutional investments.
  • Partner with investigators across Gladstone and UCSF to deliver comprehensive bioinformatics support, including:
  • Pre-experiment consulting and experimental design.
  • Data analysis, visualization, and interpretation across diverse data types (e.g., genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics).
  • Statistical analysis of complex datasets (e.g., longitudinal, hierarchical, survival models).
  • Collaborate with computational and experimental researchers, as well as the Scientific Computing and IT groups, to integrate workflows, share best practices, and advise on Gladstone’s deployment of AI tools and high-performance computing resources.
  • Lead or contribute to grant applications related to bioinformatics and computational biology.
  • Develop and maintain robust analysis pipelines for large-scale omics datasets.
  • Assess, test, and implement best practices for reproducible and scalable data analysis.
  • Integrate commonly used open-source bioinformatics software and build web-based or cloud-enabled analytical platforms.
  • Offer workshops, training, and outreach to promote data science literacy among researchers.

What you will need:

  • PhD in bioinformatics, computational biology, statistics, computer science, biological sciences, or a related field.
  • At least 5+ years of relevant experience post-PhD, including leadership or management of a bioinformatics or computational core facility (10+ years with MS considered, PhD preferred).
  • Demonstrated success in technical proficiency, scientific creativity, collaboration, and independent thought.
  • Proven experience supervising PhD- and MS-level staff.
  • Experience managing budgets, grants, and financial administration.
  • Strong background in the statistical analysis of biological data.
  • Extensive experience with high-throughput sequencing data (e.g., RNA-seq, ChIP-seq, WGS/WES).
  • Proficiency in programming and scripting (e.g., Python, R).
  • High-performance computing experience in Unix/Linux environments.
  • Familiarity with cloud computing and web-based analytical platforms.
  • Strong publication record and evidence of successful extramural funding.
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and project management skills.
