Role Overview

The Chief Engineer plays a critical leadership role in maintaining the physical integrity, safety, and functionality of the resort. This position supports a seamless and restorative guest experience by ensuring that all building systems, equipment, and grounds operate efficiently, safely, and in alignment with Westin brand standards.

Through proactive maintenance, thoughtful planning, and collaborative leadership, the Chief Engineer helps create an environment where guests and associates alike feel comfortable, supported, and at ease.

Core Responsibilities

Property Operations & Preventive Maintenance

  • Assist in planning, scheduling, and evaluating preventive maintenance programs to protect resort assets and ensure uninterrupted operations
  • Support management of the physical plant, including HVAC, refrigeration, plumbing, electrical, water treatment, generators, fire pumps, and life safety systems
  • Monitor the quality and timeliness of work orders completed by associates and contractors
  • Recommend and coordinate repairs, renovations, equipment replacement, and facility improvements
  • Assist in managing departmental budgets, capital expenditures, and energy conservation initiatives

Maintaining Property Standards & Safety

  • Inspect and evaluate the physical condition of facilities to identify maintenance needs and safety concerns
  • Maintain accurate logs, records, and compliance documentation as required
  • Operate generators and fire pumps as necessary
  • Provide emergency response services and support 24/7 operational readiness
  • Repair equipment such as refrigeration and laundry systems as needed
  • Ensure associates have the proper tools, supplies, equipment, and uniforms to perform their duties safely and effectively
  • Uphold safety, security, and asset protection standards throughout the property

Leadership & Collaboration

  • Assist in supervising the day-to-day operations of the Engineering department and related teams
  • Establish and maintain open, collaborative relationships with associates and cross-functional departments
  • Communicate expectations clearly and consistently to support business objectives
  • Recognize performance and reinforce a culture of accountability, teamwork, and support

Delivering Exceptional Service

  • Lead by example in supporting guest satisfaction and associate engagement
  • Empower associates to provide responsive, solution-oriented service
  • Set a positive example for guest relations and service recovery

Associate Development & Human Resources Support

  • Assist with interviewing, hiring, and onboarding associates with the appropriate technical skills
  • Support orientation and ongoing training programs, including safety procedures and brand standards
  • Communicate performance expectations in alignment with job descriptions
  • Participate in performance evaluations and provide feedback as needed
  • Ensure disciplinary actions and documentation align with Standard and Local Operating Procedures (SOPs and LSOPs), including participation in the Peer Review Process
  • Utilize available training tools to support associate development
  • Solicit associate feedback to promote engagement and continuous improvement
Additional Responsibilities
  • Maintain knowledge of building systems, codes, and industry best practices
  • Support audits, inspections, and compliance initiatives
  • Assist with additional engineering or operational duties as assigned to support guest and associate well-being
QualificationsCandidate Profile

Education & Experience

  • High school diploma or GED with a minimum of 3 years of experience in engineering, maintenance, or a related professional area, including technical training in HVAC-R, electrical, and plumbing
    OR
  • Associate degree or higher from an accredited university in Building and Construction, Engineering, Mechanics, or a related field, with at least 1 year of experience in engineering or maintenance and technical training in HVAC-R, electrical, and plumbing
