As Chief of Staff to the CGO, you will coordinate operational efforts, manage projects, and facilitate communication to support growth in an early-stage startup.

WindBorne Systems is supercharging weather forecasts with a unique proprietary data source: a global constellation of next-generation smart weather balloons targeting the most critical atmospheric data. We design, manufacture, and operate our own balloons, using the data they collect to generate otherwise unattainable weather intelligence.

Our mission is to eliminate weather uncertainty, and in the process help humanity adapt to climate change, be that predicting hurricanes or speeding the adoption of renewables. We are building a future in which the planet is instrumented by thousands of our microballoons, eliminating gaps in our understanding of the planet and giving people and businesses the information they need to make critical decisions. The founding team of Stanford engineers was named Forbes 2019 30 under 30 and is backed by top-tier investors, including Khosla Ventures and Footwork VC.

The revenue generated by WindBorne’s Growth org has grown 2x YOY in the past three years, and 3x since 2024, and we’re only getting started. To keep growing at this rate, we need an operational backbone to turn strategy into execution, remove friction, and ensure nothing falls through the cracks. In other words, we need someone to be the all-important grease that keeps our machine running smoothly.

In this role, you'll be the right hand to the Chief Growth Officer, balancing the chaos of an early-stage startup with the relentless need to maintain high customer engagement and execution. You'll establish and own the systems and processes that allow the growth team to move fast without breaking things, from tooling that increases efficiency to inter-organizational workflows, deconfliction, and information sharing. If you thrive in ambiguity, can build structure where none exists, and are the type of person who gets things done without waiting for permission, we’d love to hear from you.

Responsibilities
  • Own the Growth team's operating rhythm including weekly syncs, monthly business reviews, and planning cycles, ensuring nothing slips through the cracks

  • Be a reliable resource for all things Growth–from project management to operational scheduling to tracking high-value sales cycles

  • Translate high-level strategy into logical, actionable plans with clear owners and timelines

  • Adapt and readapt as priorities, product, and collaborations shift and evolve

  • Establish tooling which makes day-to-day operations seamless and supports the scalability of the team

  • Manage the CGO's calendar and priorities, ensuring time is allocated to highest-impact activities

  • Own end-to-end execution of critical cross-functional growth initiatives

  • Conduct research and analysis to inform strategic decisions and recommendations

  • Identify risks early and develop mitigation plans with relevant stakeholders

  • Support hiring efforts including sourcing, interviewing, and onboarding new team members

  • Conduct post-mortems on key initiatives and capture learnings to improve execution

  • Handle ad-hoc strategic projects and act as a thought partner and force multiplier to the CGO

Skills and Qualifications
  • Must have at least two years of experience working in operations leadership at early stage startups

  • Proven ability to manage complex projects end-to-end with multiple stakeholders, competing priorities, and tight deadlines—and can point to specific examples

  • Strong acumen and preference for organization, utilizing data, and establishing workable, scalable processes

  • High adaptability and no ego

  • Exceptional communication skills—you can distill complex information into clear, concise updates for different audiences and facilitate engaging, productive meetings that people genuinely enjoy

Benefits
  • 401(k)

  • Dental insurance

  • Health insurance

  • Vision insurance

  • Unlimited PTO

  • Stock Option Plan

  • Office food and beverages

Salary

  • $100,000-150,000 ** We are considering a range of backgrounds and experience levels for this position and adjust our offers accordingly to be competitive with market rates.

What you need to know about the San Francisco Tech Scene

San Francisco and the surrounding Bay Area attracts more startup funding than any other region in the world. Home to Stanford University and UC Berkeley, leading VC firms and several of the world’s most valuable companies, the Bay Area is the place to go for anyone looking to make it big in the tech industry. That said, San Francisco has a lot to offer beyond technology thanks to a thriving art and music scene, excellent food and a short drive to several of the country’s most beautiful recreational areas.

Key Facts About San Francisco Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 365,500; 13.9% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Google, Apple, Salesforce, Meta
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, cloud computing, fintech, consumer technology, software
  • Funding Landscape: $50.5 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Sequoia Capital, Andreessen Horowitz, Bessemer Venture Partners, Greylock Partners, Khosla Ventures, Kleiner Perkins
  • Research Centers and Universities: Stanford University; University of California, Berkeley; University of San Francisco; Santa Clara University; Ames Research Center; Center for AI Safety; California Institute for Regenerative Medicine
