Description:

Computational Research Associate I - Corces Lab

Description

We are looking for a computational research associate to join our lab group within the Gladstone Institute of Neurological Disease. The candidate will be a critical member of a team of biologists working to understand the role of the epigenome in neurodegenerative diseases including Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease. The position will require the candidate to learn and perform basic and advanced computational biology techniques in the fields of single-cell biology, genetics, and epigenetics.

This position will be research-based and fully computational with multiple opportunities for publication. The skills and experiences acquired from this position would provide a useful background for future pursuits in biological research-based graduate education and we place a strong emphasis on mentorship of the next generation of scientists. While prior laboratory experience is valuable, we place a greater emphasis on essential personal attributes such as organization, attention to detail, and communication skills. We have an established track record of helping young scientists achieve admission to graduate education programs and apply for and receive fellowships such as the National Science Foundation’s Graduate Research Fellowship Program. More information about the laboratory and its current and past members can be found at www.corceslab.com

Please do not send a separate email regarding your application. All applications will be reviewed on Workday and additional emails unnecessarily add to the administrative workload of the hiring team.

Duties & Responsibilities

For day-to-day activities, the candidate will be directly supervised by senior members of the laboratory and will have weekly or bi-weekly meetings with the PI, Dr. Ryan Corces. They will participate in weekly lab meetings and journal clubs and have the freedom to set their own schedule (within reason). As part of the training environment that we provide, the candidate will be encouraged to participate in professional development activities not directly tied to their work such as attending seminars, conferences, workshops, etc. Remote/hybrid work is not permitted.

As noted above, direct prior experience in the relevant techniques is not required. We list below the types of activities one could expect to perform in this position:

  • Single-cell analysis of gene expression and chromatin accessibility data

  • Training and querying machine learning models to understand the impact of genetic variants

  • Development of robust software and pipelines for use internally within the lab and for broad sharing with the research community

  • Collaboration with wet-lab members of the lab to assist with data analysis of ‘omics datasets

  • Routine laboratory management such as supply ordering, maintenance, and upkeep (5% of total effort)

Qualifications

  • AA/AS and 2+ years of relevant experience or BA/BS in a relevant field

  • Prior coding experience in R and/or Python

What we offer

  • Targeted mentorship to help you achieve your goals, both during your tenure in the lab and beyond

  • Training in how to think and communicate as a scientist

  • Training in computational biology techniques in the fields of single-cell biology, genomics, neurobiology, and epigenomics

  • Opportunities for scientific publication

  • Access to Gladstone’s training classes and tools

  • Access to Gladstone’s guest scientific lectures from world renowned professors

  • Transparent and equitable pay based on Gladstone Institutes’ standardized policies

Salary Range:

$28.35/hr.-$32.67/hr.

Gladstone Perks & Benefits

  • People–work with talented, committed, and supportive teammates within an organization that values each member of its community.

  • A meaningful place to grow and learn–whether it’s your professional skills or scientific knowledge, we have the resources and environment to advance either so you can better support Gladstone’s mission to drive a new era of discovery in disease-oriented science and to mentor tomorrow’s leaders in an inspiring and excellent environment.

  • Healthy work/life balance–you are highly engaged and productive at work because you can have time to recharge and enjoy a vibrant life outside of work.

  • Compensation–competitive salary. Title and salary will be commensurate with education and experience.
