Description

Founded in 2004, BME Strategies is a Massachusetts-based consulting firm specializing in the design, implementation, and evaluation of public health programs for local, regional, and state government partners. Our work supports evidence-based, community-driven solutions that strengthen public health systems and advance equity across the communities we serve. At BME, our clients are on the front lines of Public Health. Priorities may shift but our commitment to supporting our partners does not. We take pride in having multi-year, multi-project engagements, often working closely as an extension of their staff. Our success comes from our shared values: a bias toward action; optimistically collaborative; willingness to navigate ambiguity; minimal ego - no job is too small or big; pursuing the equitable solution; always learning, and; committed to quality at every stage.

Position Overview

The Consultant, Data Visualization & Communications Strategy partners directly with government and public-sector stakeholders to transform complex data, technical content, and public health information into clear, accessible, and actionable dashboards, visualizations, reports, and communication materials. This hands-on role serves as a bridge across data visualization, communications strategy, and creative design initiatives supporting the Massachusetts Local Public Health Data Solution called Metrik, a Commonwealth collaborative initiative by the Executive Office of Health and Human Services (EOHHS) and the Department of Public Health (DPH).

This role combines strategic communications expertise with business intelligence and visualization capabilities, helping clients better understand data, communicate impact, and drive informed decision-making. The ideal candidate is both analytically minded and creatively driven; someone who thrives in ambiguity, leads client engagements with confidence, and brings structure, empathy, and innovation to every project.

Key Responsibilities

Client Strategy, Advisory & Engagement

  • Serve as a trusted advisor to clients on data communication, visualization strategy, and public health storytelling.
  • Lead and/or support client discovery sessions to understand goals, audiences, data needs, and desired outcomes; translate insights into actionable deliverables and technical solutions.
  • Navigate project ambiguity and pivot seamlessly to maintain steady partnership and meet evolving client needs.
  • Facilitate presentations, stakeholder discussions, and refinement sessions to guide strategic communications and data visualization approaches.
  • Develop tailored communications and reporting strategies that align with client objectives and target audiences.

Data Visualization & Business Intelligence

  • Build dashboards, charts, interactive reports, and analytical products aligned with approved requirements, indicators, and business rules using curated data sources.
  • Translate technical, policy-heavy, or data-intensive content into clear, visually compelling, and user-centered materials.
  • Implement indicator and metric logic in visualization platforms where appropriate, including calculations, measures, formatting, labeling, and interactivity.
  • Configure and maintain BI semantic layer/modeling artifacts as applicable (e.g., Tableau data sources, Power BI datasets/models).
  • Improve dashboard performance, usability, and maintainability through optimization and scalable design practices.
  • Support quality assurance and release readiness activities, including validation of filters, exports, calculations, and stakeholder review feedback.

Creative Direction & Design Execution

  • Develop high-quality creative deliverables including reports, infographics, presentations, dashboards, and digital media.
  • Maintain creative and visualization standards and ensure consistency across client projects and deliverables.
  • Develop reusable templates, visualization components, and communication assets to support consistency and efficiency across projects.
  • Manage/maintain design and production workflows from concept through delivery, coordinating with internal and external collaborators as needed.

Evaluation & Continuous Improvement

  • Develop and track metrics to assess dashboard effectiveness, communication performance, and audience engagement.
  • Continuously refine creative and technical processes to enhance efficiency, accessibility, and client value.
  • Other duties may be assigned to support BME marketing work or organizational initiatives when surge capacity is needed.

In This Role, Success Will Look Like:

  • Clients receive clear, engaging, and actionable dashboards, reports, and communication materials that improve understanding and support informed decision-making.
  • Visualization and communication assets are scalable, maintainable, and reusable across projects and initiatives.
  • Stakeholder feedback is thoughtfully incorporated into deliverables through structured refinement and collaboration processes.
  • Projects are delivered with high quality, strong organization, and exceptional client satisfaction.
  • Independently drive work with minimal day-to-day supervision.
