You'll work with sharp, passionate people who take ownership, raise the bar, and genuinely enjoy what they do. Whether you're in Auckland, Wellington, or Christchurch, you'll be part of a team that invests in your growth and makes space for you to shine.

The Role
We're looking for a Senior Engineer with strong Python and API integration skills to join a fast-moving AI-focused engineering team at one of our clients. This is an initial 3-month contract with a strong likelihood of extension.

This role is based in Auckland (Open to Wellington), Melbourne or the UK, with a hybrid working arrangement, and we're specifically looking for candidates based in one of these two locations. You'll be working on a genuinely interesting problem, building the integration layer that enables AI agents to interact with internal systems at scale, with the team working towards resolving the majority of user requests directly through AI agents. You'll be reporting into a senior engineering leader and will need to be comfortable operating with some ambiguity as the architecture evolves. An immediate start is preferred.

What you'll be doing

  • Integration Library Development: Designing and building a library of Python-based functions that serve as tools for AI agents, enabling them to fetch and act on data from internal systems.
  • Backend Logic and System Integration: Building the backend logic and system handshakes that connect AI agents to a range of internal APIs and data sources.
  • API Design and Implementation: Working with FastAPI-style patterns and Pydantic models to develop clean, well-structured integration tooling that moves away from legacy Salesforce-centric approaches.
  • Collaborative Engineering: Working closely with a cross-functional team including data scientists, backend engineers, designers, and business analysts to align on technical direction and delivery priorities.
  • Technical Problem Solving: Operating effectively under vague or evolving direction, bringing clarity and structure to integration challenges as the team scales its AI capabilities.

The experience we're looking for

  • Python Proficiency: Strong, demonstrable Python skills with a focus on backend development and building production-grade tooling.
  • API Integration Experience: Solid experience designing and consuming REST APIs, with a good understanding of integration patterns and system-to-system communication.
  • FastAPI and Pydantic: Hands-on experience with FastAPI and Pydantic, or a strong familiarity with similar patterns and a clear ability to get up to speed quickly.
  • AI Agent Tooling: Exposure to building tools or integrations for AI or LLM-based systems is a strong advantage, though not strictly required.
  • Independent Working Style: Proven ability to work effectively in distributed, cross-functional teams and to deliver with a degree of autonomy when direction is broad.

What's next?

Sound like the opportunity you've been looking for? Please apply and one of our Talent team will be in touch for a confidential chat. You must be eligible to work in New Zealand to be considered for this opportunity.
