Job Overview

The Controller will be a key member of a growing finance team in a position with substantial opportunity for growth.  Reporting to the CFO, this position will be primarily responsible for managing the monthly financial close process, including the development and enhancement of systems, policies, and procedures to support the monthly close and periodic reporting to internal and external stakeholders. This person will also have responsibility for several functions such as accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, tax, and revenue accounting.

The ideal candidate will have leadership capabilities, solid operational and technical accounting background, work proactively, and enjoy interacting both internally with cross-functional colleagues and externally with auditors and investors. A high level of integrity is a must and pairing it with business acumen and sound judgment will differentiate the right candidate.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the monthly consolidated financial close process, including ensuring all costs incurred are properly recorded, reviewing journal entries, account balance reconciliations and report preparation. Set targets for close timing and drive process efficiencies to improve availability of information.
  • Manage and mentor a high-performing controllership team, ensuring continued development and success of the team.
  • Drive the ongoing development/establishment of accounting policies and procedures and operational strategies. Make recommendations for changes as needed, ensure that company policies and procedures are followed, and establish the proper techniques to discover and prevent fraud.
  • Participate in strategic financial projects including the enhancement or implementation of ERP and other related software.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally on contract reviews to ensure that company objectives are achieved and revenue is recognized in accordance with GAAP.
  • Serve as the primary contact with external auditors to ensure successful audit results and compliance.
  • Serve as the ‘face of finance’ internally to support employees with incoming requests in areas of responsibility. 
  • Interact at all levels with internal and external stakeholders to produce timely, efficient and accurate month-end close as well as financial reporting.
  • Assist the CFO in performing treasury functions such as cash allocation and movement between bank accounts.
  • Lead the compilation of information for preparation of tax returns and filings as well as general review. Drive tax strategy and compliance for the organization.
  • Review payroll prior to submission, ensuring accuracy and completeness. Drive process scalability for growing company.
  • Maintain and further development of a strong control environment with a goal of eventually maintaining SOX-compliant controls.
  • Responsible for hierarchy and scalability in chart of accounts and accuracy in the general ledger and financial statements.
  • Analyze the effect of new accounting rules and study regulations and guidance to ensure correct application of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or higher degree in Business, Finance or Accounting and a CPA required, with Big 4 audit experience strongly preferred
  • 12+ years’ experience in audit, corporate accounting, or a combination thereof. Energy or manufacturing experience is required, with both preferred.
  • Knowledge of various accounting functional areas is required with a strong understanding of GAAP, and solid understanding of and exposure to internal controls    
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills

The level of pay within the range will depend on a variety of job-related factors that may include location, relevant prior experience and/or education, or particular skills and expertise. New hires joining the company tend to be paid within the starting base pay range noted above, with opportunities to increase pay over time based on development of additional skills, competencies, and company-specific knowledge.
