About Us:

Fieldguide is establishing a new state of trust for global commerce and capital markets through automating and streamlining the work of assurance and audit practitioners specifically within cybersecurity, privacy, and ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance). Put simply, we build software for the people who enable trust between businesses.

We’re based in San Francisco, CA, but built as a remote-first company that enables you to do your best work from anywhere. We're backed by top investors including Bessemer Venture Partners, 8VC, Floodgate, Y Combinator, DNX Ventures, Global Founders Capital, Justin Kan, Elad Gil, and more.

We value diversity — in backgrounds and in experiences. We need people from all backgrounds and walks of life to help build the future of audit and advisory. Fieldguide’s team is inclusive, driven, humble and supportive. We are deliberate and self-reflective about the kind of team and culture that we are building, seeking teammates that are not only strong in their own aptitudes but care deeply about supporting each other's growth.

As an early stage start-up employee, you’ll have the opportunity to build out the future of business trust. We make audit practitioners’ lives easier by eliminating up to 50% of their work and giving them better work-life balance. If you share our values and enthusiasm for building a great culture and product, you will find a home at Fieldguide.

About the Role

We're looking for a Controller to build and lead our accounting function with an eye toward audit-readiness and eventual public-company standards. This is a foundational leadership role reporting to the VP of Finance, and you’ll be instrumental in establishing the institutional rigor that supports our next phase of growth.

This role is ideal for someone who thrives in building mode, not just operating within established systems. You'll partner closely with our Senior Director of FP&A and work cross-functionally with leaders across the company to ensure we have the financial infrastructure to scale. If you've taken a company through its first audit or helped build toward IPO-readiness, and you're energized by the prospect of doing it again at a mission-driven company, we'd love to talk.

What You’ll Do

  • Act as a strategic thought partner to Finance leadership in building an accounting team to support reporting and compliance needs

  • Own and continuously improve the month-end and quarter-end close process, driving toward a 5-day close

  • Prepare accurate and timely financial statements in accordance with US GAAP

  • Establish and document accounting policies, with particular focus on ASC 606 revenue recognition, expense recognition, stock-based compensation, and other technical areas

  • Stay current on accounting standards and assess their impact on our financial reporting

  • Serve as the technical accounting expert for complex or non-routine transactions

  • Manage all aspects of general ledger accounting, including journal entries, reconciliations, and variance analysis

  • Oversee accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and treasury functions

  • Prepare the company for its first external audit, managing auditor relationships and deliverables

  • Design and implement internal controls that can scale toward SOX readiness

Who You Are

  • CPA with public accounting/audit experience required; Big 4 or nationally recognized firm preferred

  • 10+ years of progressive accounting experience, with at least 3 years in a leadership role

  • Deep expertise in SaaS revenue recognition (ASC 606) and related technical accounting

  • Experience taking a company through its first external audit or IPO-readiness process

  • Track record of building accounting processes and teams at high-growth companies (Series B–D experience ideal)

  • Experience implementing or optimizing financial systems (NetSuite, Salesforce, billing platforms)

  • Strong communication skills — able to translate technical accounting to non-finance stakeholders

  • Hands-on leader comfortable building, developing, and scaling a team

Bonus Points

  • Public company or IPO experience

  • Experience with international entities and multi-currency accounting

  • Familiarity with SOX 404 compliance frameworks
