This role sits at the heart of Generate Capital’s project development engine. The Counsel, Project Development will serve as a trusted legal partner to Generate’s development, permitting, and interconnection teams across a diverse portfolio of energy assets—including behind-the-meter and front-of-the-meter power projects, community solar, large-load infrastructure, and digital infrastructure.

The ideal candidate is someone who has rolled up their sleeves on real projects—navigating the full arc from site control and permitting through procurement, construction, and commercial operation.

This is not a siloed financing role; it requires a generalist mindset, sound judgment under uncertainty, strong cross-functional instincts, and the confidence to advise internal clients who hold strong views. This person must be ready to own matters independently, and step into a wide range of project and asset management legal needs as they arise.

What you will be doing at Generate Capital as Counsel:

  • Serve as primary legal counsel to Generate’s development teams on energy projects from inception through construction, covering the full lifecycle of permitting, interconnection, procurement, and construction

  • Negotiate and draft a broad range of development agreements, including EPC contracts, procurement agreements, offtake agreements, and interconnection agreements

  • Provide counsel and manage regulatory compliance matters, including regulatory filings, submissions, and ongoing compliance across multiple jurisdictions

  • Partner with cross-functional teams—including development, engineering, finance, and asset management—to facilitate timely project execution and resolve issues as they arise

  • Support day-to-day legal needs across Generate’s project portfolio —including routine asset management matters, dispute resolution, and contract administration

  • Adapt quickly to new asset types and legal contexts—including digital infrastructure and large-load projects—and bring a generalist’s confidence to novel situations where the answer isn’t always obvious

Candidate qualifications & core characteristics:

  • JD from an accredited law school and active bar membership; approximately 4 – 8 years of legal experience

  • Experience with energy project development, EPC agreements, procurement contracts, and offtake agreements is highly valued—candidates who have supported projects from development through construction are strongly preferred

  • Familiarity with permitting, interconnection, and energy regulatory compliance across multiple jurisdictions

  • Behind-the-meter power project experience is a plus; digital infrastructure is nice-to-have but not required

  • Experience with digital infrastructure projects is a plus, but not required

  • Strong attention to detail, sound drafting instincts, and good interpersonal skills across development, engineering, finance, and operations teams

  • Collaborative, with strong judgment under ambiguity

Generate’s compensation packages are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case. Salary decisions take into account a wide variety of factors including, but not limited to: skill sets, experience and training, licensure and certifications, geographic location, and other business and organizational needs. A reasonable estimate of the base salary range for this role is $200,000 - $275,000. In addition, the compensation package may include a discretionary bonus and other benefits, including health care benefits, retirement benefits, benefits permitting paid days off (including sick leave, parental leave, and paid time off or vacation benefits), and other benefits that must be reported for federal tax purposes.

Generate Capital is an equal opportunity employer and does not discriminate against otherwise qualified applicants on the basis of actual or perceived race, color, creed, religion, ancestry, citizenship status, age, sex, marital status, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability or handicap, veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by applicable federal, state, or local laws.
