About Deep Origin

Led by Michael Antonov, a co-founder of Oculus, and well-funded by Formic Ventures, Deep Origin is poised to reinvent the way scientists work and life science innovations come to life. We see a future largely free of diseases, with a 150-year lifespan being the norm. To get there, we are building an operating system for science, enabling scientists to be more productive and to bring tomorrow's ideas to life quickly and at a reasonable cost.
Role Description
As our CTO / Head of Engineering, you will wear multiple hats: a systems architect, a hands-on software engineer, a project manager, and an inspirational leader. You will lead and scale our engineering team, design complex, scalable architectures, and actively contribute code while building and coaching a world-class team.

Applicants must be authorized to work for any employer in the U.S. We are unable to sponsor or take over sponsorship of an employment Visa at this time.

Requirements
  • Hands-on technical expertise in Node.js and TypeScript, with strong fundamentals in relational databases (Postgres) and NoSQL (MongoDB).
  • Deep experience with AWS, cloud architecture design, and DevOps tools.
  • Proven track record architecting and scaling complex systems from concept to launch at startups.
  • Strong foundation in software engineering principles, design patterns, and scalable architecture.
  • Excellent project management skills, including familiarity with agile and lean methodologies, sprint planning, and stakeholder management.
  • Proven leadership and team-building experience: ability to inspire, motivate, and develop high-performing engineering teams.
  • Exceptional communication skills — able to distill complex technical concepts for executives and customers while diving deep with engineers.
  • Visionary mindset, with a proactive “can-do” attitude and passion for building innovative products in a fast-paced environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to work across all phases: writing code, reviewing architecture, guiding projects, hiring, and executive presentations — sometimes all in the same day.
  • Must work onsite at least 3 days a week in the office in South San Francisco.

    Responsibilities:
  • Architect and build highly scalable, robust, and maintainable systems from the ground up, taking products from 0 to 1 and beyond.
  • Lead a team of 15-20 engineers from status quo to success and high productivity.
  • Define a coding standard and software architecture. Perform code review to verify adherence to software architecture.
  • Design cloud-native architectures, with deep familiarity with AWS services, networking, security, and cost optimization.
  • Establish and maintain DevOps practices, including CI/CD pipelines, monitoring, and infrastructure-as-code approaches.
  • Drive technical vision and strategy, ensuring alignment with business goals and future scalability needs.
  • Lead and mentor a growing engineering team: recruit, hire, onboard, coach, and if necessary, make tough personnel decisions.
  • Champion best practices in software development, including agile methodologies, testing, code reviews, and iterative delivery.
  • Own cross-functional project delivery, collaborating with product, design, operations, and customer success teams to ensure on-time and high-quality execution.
  • Communicate seamlessly across different levels: deeply technical with engineers, strategic and executive with the CEO and COO, persuasive with peers, clear and empathetic with customers and non-technical teams.
  • Embrace and drive change, continuously evaluating and adopting new technologies and methodologies to keep the team ahead of the curve.
