Summer 2026 Internship · Hybrid (San Mateo)

Most location systems assume the data is clean. In the real world, it isn’t. Smartpin (https://smartpin.app) is building a platform that turns noisy signals from Bluetooth devices, mobile phones, and satellite-based receivers into trusted operational data and location intelligence for real businesses. Our engineers work on the problem of ground truth, determining where assets actually are when signals disagree, disappear, or arrive late. We are looking for one senior intern to join our small, scrappy engineering team working on real-world location intelligence systems. Your work directly affects how field teams, warehouse operators, and construction managers trust their asset data.

What You’ll Do

  • Work on backend systems that turn noisy device signals into reliable location intelligence
  • Analyze and improve how device events are filtered, scored, and normalized
  • Build tools and services that help determine location confidence and ground truth
  • Work with telemetry from BLE devices, mobile phones, and satellite-based receivers
  • Collaborate with Backend, Web and Mobile engineers on production systems
  • Leverage AI-assisted development tools as part of a modern engineering workflow

What You Bring

  • Masters of Computer or Senior Bachelor Science student
  • Experience in implementing and refining data systems
  • Comfortable working with messy real-world data
  • Experience with Python, APIs, and backend systems
  • Strong programming fundamentals and problem-solving skills
  • Pragmatic, collaborative, and self-directed, you take initiative

Nice to Have

  • Geospatial data or mapping experience
  • Event pipelines or time-series data
  • Data analysis or anomaly detection
  • Cloud infrastructure exposure
  • IoT, BLE, or sensor data experience

Why Smartpin

  • Ship production BLE products that extend from ground-level Bluetooth to low-Earth orbit via Hubble Network satellites
  • Small team, real ownership, your work ships to production and reaches real B2B customers
  • Direct mentorship from Senior Engineering with CTO-level exposure
  • Rare opportunity to work on applied backend and data systems problems that matter
