1 big thing: Axios is seeking an execution-focused Director of Accounting to lead accounting operations, monthly close, treasury, tax, audit, compliance, and finance systems as our business and finance function continues to scale.

Why it matters: Strong accounting operations create the foundation for faster, clearer, and more reliable business decisions. This role will help ensure our financials are accurate, audit-ready, and built to support continued growth.

Go deeper: This role sits on our Finance team, manages one direct report, and partners closely with FP&A, Payroll, Revenue Finance, department leaders, and external partners.

Responsibilities include:

  • Lead the monthly close process, including close timelines, journal entries, reconciliations, accruals, fixed assets, and close reporting packages.
  • Maintain accounting policies, procedures, controls, chart of accounts governance, and operational documentation to support accurate and scalable financial reporting.
  • Oversee AP, procurement, vendor management, contractor payments, cash management, bank reconciliations, 13-week cash forecasting, and treasury operations.
  • Manage bank access, fraud prevention, and accounting control processes to ensure strong financial governance and compliance.
  • Partner with Finance leadership to improve cash visibility, working capital management, and accounting operations.
  • Lead external audit coordination and oversee tax, sales and use tax, and related compliance processes with external partners.
  • Own and improve accounting systems, integrations, workflows, data integrity, SOPs, and business continuity documentation across finance operations.
  • Drive automation, AI adoption, and process improvements to improve efficiency, scalability, accuracy, and controls.
  • Partner cross-functionally with FP&A, Payroll, Revenue Finance, and business leaders to support forecasting, reporting, and operational decision-making.
  • Lead, coach, and develop accounting team members while fostering a collaborative and high-performing team culture.

The details: Ideal candidates will demonstrate most of the following:

  • 8+ years of progressive accounting experience, including ownership of month-end close, audit, tax, treasury, internal controls, and accounting operations.
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP, accrual accounting, balance sheet management, AP, cash management, and financial reporting.
  • Experience managing accounting operations in a fast-paced, scaling organization.
  • Experience with ERP systems and finance process automation; Sage Intacct experience preferred.
  • Experience leading audits and managing relationships with external tax and accounting advisors.
  • Familiarity with sales and use tax, state filings, nexus considerations, and compliance workflows.
  • Strong analytical, project management, and process improvement skills, including leveraging systems, automation, AI, and workflow redesign to improve accounting operations.
  • Advanced Excel and Google Sheets proficiency.
  • Strong communication, cross-functional partnership, and stakeholder management skills.
  • Experience managing and developing team members.
  • High-accountability, execution-oriented mindset with comfort operating in a fast-paced environment.

Starting salary for this role is in the range of $145,000 - $185,000 and is dependent on numerous factors, including but not limited to location, work experience, and skills. This range does not include other compensation benefits. Axios' compensation philosophy takes into account the cost of labor differentials across the country. Because this is a remote-optional job posting, this salary range takes into account all possible locations within the United States, but candidates will only be eligible for the salary range for their location.
