The Director of Applications & Connected Services will lead the development of intuitive web and mobile experiences, ensure backend services and APIs are reliable and scalable, and drive application performance while collaborating with product teams. Responsibilities include setting technical strategy, delivering cross-platform experiences, and mentoring leaders.
About the Role
Agtonomy builds factory-fit autonomy that lets a single operator manage fleets of industrial machines through a simple, reliable app experience. We’re hiring a Director to own the applications and connected services that make Agtonomy’s product feel effortless: beautiful, intuitive web & mobile experiences backed by reliable, scalable cloud services. If you’ve built consumer-grade UX on top of serious backend systems, you’ll thrive here.
This role is responsible for how our products function in practice—how operators, customers, and internal teams interact with our systems. You’ll partner around the organization to ensure applications are usable, secure, performant, and aligned with real-world workflows and needs, while maintaining a strong, scalable digital foundation.
What You’ll Own
- Lead mobile & web experiences used by operators and internal teams to plan work, monitor progress, and resolve issues in the field.
- Backend services, APIs, integrations, and data contracts that connect apps to deployed systems, designed for scale, reliability, and fast iteration.
- Drive reliability, security, observability, and performance across the application layer (customer-facing & internal tools).
- Scale autonomous machine interfaces that connect real-time telemetry, geospatial data and large fleets of autonomous robots.
- Partner with other product & software teams to ensure telemetry and application data is modeled well and supports product features, reporting, and operational visibility.
- Build and lead a multidisciplinary organization (backend, web, mobile; data-adjacent), set technical direction, and consistently ship.
- Raise the bar on interaction design, information architecture, and UX polish treating the app experience as a core competitive advantage.
What You'll Do
- Set a clear technical strategy and roadmap for applications & connected services, aligned with Product and Operations.
- Establish durable architectures built to scale including service boundaries, API standards, data models, and workflows.
- Deliver a consistent cross-platform experience (web, mobile, internal tools) with high UX polish for real operational workflows.
- Build unique but familiar experiences for how work gets done in industrial automation.
- Build strong interfaces between cloud services, apps, and edge/robotic systems, with clear ownership and escalation paths.
- Hire, mentor, and grow leaders; create a culture of high standards, fast learning loops, and customer accountability.
What You'll Bring
- 10+ years in software engineering; strong strength in distributed systems and/or high-quality web/mobile product engineering (ideally both).
- 4+ years leading teams across backend + client apps.
- Track record shipping customer-facing products (web and/or mobile) backed by modern APIs and data systems.
- Strong product instincts: you translate messy real-world workflows into simple software.
- Experience collaborating tightly with Product, Design, QA, and field/operations teams.
- Demonstrated ability to partner with Product/Design to deliver high-polish experiences; workflows, not just architectures.
- Experience operating production systems at scale (SLOs, observability, incident response, performance).
What Makes You a Strong Fit
- Built software for connected devices / robotics / IoT or other “software meets hardware” environments.
- Experience with telemetry, event-driven systems, and analytics/reporting surfaces for operations.
- Experience in consumer or prosumer product companies where UX and speed of iteration mattered.
- Built platforms for connected devices / IoT / edge or other domains where reliability and data integrity are non-negotiable.
