WHOOP is seeking a Director of Battery Technology to build and lead the Battery Technology organization, shaping the team and technical direction that will power current and future generations of WHOOP products. You will set the technical vision for battery technology and build a high-performing global team across the US and China to advance battery performance, safety, reliability, and integration.

As the leader of Battery Technology, you will own the multi-year roadmap for how WHOOP develops, validates, integrates, and manufactures battery technologies. You will partner across Hardware, Product, Operations, and Supply Chain to translate ambitious product goals into battery technology strategies, while developing relationships with cell manufacturers and technology partners that position WHOOP at the forefront of battery innovation.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

 
  • Build and lead the Battery Technology organization across Battery Cell Engineering, Battery Systems Engineering, and in-region engineering team members in China.

  • Define and drive the multi-year battery technology roadmap across cell chemistry, battery architecture, charging, safety, reliability, and performance.

  • Own battery technology development from advanced exploration and supplier development through design, validation, manufacturing ramp, and field performance.

  • Build strategic relationships with cell manufacturers and technology partners, influencing supplier roadmaps and identifying technologies that can differentiate future WHOOP products.

  • Partner across Hardware, Product, Operations, and Supply Chain to drive system-level decisions and tradeoffs across battery life, size, performance, integration, safety, cost, and member experience.

  • Develop technical leaders, engineering capabilities, processes, and infrastructure that enable the Battery Technology organization to execute and scale.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 10+ years of experience in battery technology, battery systems, electrochemistry, or related hardware engineering, including meaningful engineering leadership experience.

  • Deep expertise in lithium-ion cell technology, including chemistry, cell design, performance, degradation, safety, qualification, and manufacturing.

  • Strong understanding of battery systems, including pack architecture, charging, protection, validation, reliability, and product integration.

  • Demonstrated success developing battery technology roadmaps and bringing new technologies from exploration into high-volume products.

  • Experience building and leading multidisciplinary or geographically distributed engineering teams and developing technical leaders.

  • Proven ability to build strategic relationships with cell manufacturers and technology partners and influence supplier technology roadmaps.

  • Strong cross-functional leadership and communication skills, with the ability to create clarity through complex technical and business tradeoffs.

  • Strong commitment to embracing and leveraging AI tools in day-to-day tasks, ensuring AI-assisted work aligns with the same high-quality standards as personal contributions.
    This role is based in the WHOOP office located in Boston, MA. The successful candidate must be prepared to relocate if necessary to work out of the Boston, MA office.

    At WHOOP, we view total compensation as the combination of base salary, equity, and benefits, with equity serving as a key differentiator that aligns our employees with the long-term success of the company and allows every member of our corporate team to own part of WHOOP and share in the company’s long-term growth and success.

     

    The U.S. base salary range for this full-time position is $210,000 - $245,000. Salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Within each range, individual pay is based on factors such as job-related skills, experience, performance, and relevant education or training.

     

    In addition to the base salary, the successful candidate will also receive benefits and a generous equity package..

     

    These ranges may be modified in the future to reflect evolving market conditions and organizational needs. While most offers will typically fall toward the starting point of the range, total compensation will depend on the candidate’s specific qualifications, expertise, and alignment with the role’s requirements.
