About Skylo
Skylo is a global Non-Terrestrial Network service provider based in Mountain View, CA, offering a service that allows smartphone and IoT cellular devices to connect directly over existing satellites. Skylo’s direct-to-device service is now live on millions of activated devices across five continents, with more than 60 million square kilometers of coverage, in partnership with multiple satellite operators, mobile network operators (MNOs), Tier-1 chipset makers, and OEMs. Devices connected over satellite are managed and served by Skylo's commercial NTN vRAN, featuring a 3GPP standards-based cloud-native base station and core. Skylo provides an anywhere, anytime connectivity solution that seamlessly roams between terrestrial and satellite networks. Our focus is on enabling connected services for people outdoors and connected workflows across three main verticals: mass-market consumer devices, automotive, and industrial IoT.
This role is located in Mountain View, CA where we are onsite 3 days a week in office.
Summary Of How You Will Impact Skylo
Skylo is hiring a Director, Brand and Communications to develop and drive our company's narrative and brand across all of stakeholders internally and externally. This is a foundational role responsible for defining the direct-to-device satellite category, building our reputation, driving thought leadership, and ensuring consistent, compelling messaging that supports our enterprise brand with consumer flare. You will position Skylo as an indispensable innovator in the market, both as an essential ingredient and as a standalone brand. You will be the team's leader, overseeing marketing, communications and PR and design to ensure all brand touchpoints are cohesive and impactful to support sales and revenue.
How You Will Contribute
- Team Leadership & Alignment: You will oversee and align the Marketing and Design functions. You will ensure a cohesive strategy and execution across all brand touchpoints, from public relations and content to digital design and co-marketing campaigns.
- Category Creation & Thought Leadership: You will drive conversation shaping activities, creating moments and thought leadership to drive the industry conversation and news. This includes securing speaking engagements for executives at top-tier forums such as CES, MWC, TED, Aspen Ideas, SXSW, and the World Economic Forum.
- Strategic Communications: Develop and lead a comprehensive communications strategy that builds awareness, enhances reputation, and drives understanding of our unique value proposition for both enterprise partners and end-consumers. This includes promoting the "Powered by Skylo" and “Skylo Certified” elements and fostering a strong, independent consumer brand identity.
- Internal Agency: You will be the internal brand and communications agency; to support the clearly defined needs of partner marketing and sales enablement; building efficient processes for clear hand-offs.
- Narrative Stewardship: You will be the narrative steward, ensuring that everyone in the company is equipped and empowered to tell the same powerful, consistent story. You will create simple, repeatable narratives and messages for employees, partners, press/influencers, investors, government regulators, and consumers.
- Media Relations & PR: Build and maintain strong relationships with key journalists, analysts, and influencers in both business/tech and consumer/lifestyle media. You will be an influence builder, focused on building deep, authentic relationships with key journalists, analysts, and influencers who can validate Skylo's tech, making it the "standard consumers seek."
- Content Strategy & Narrative development: Collaborate closely with Marketing and Partner teams to ensure a consistent, compelling, and differentiated brand voice across all external communications, including press announcements, thought leadership articles, website content, and social media. This will encompass both "Powered by Skylo" messaging and direct consumer brand storytelling.
- Executive Communications: Develop and execute communication plans for executive visibility, including speaking engagements, media interviews, and internal communications, framing their thought leadership to support both partner and consumer narratives.
- Crisis Communications: Develop and implement robust crisis communication plans, serving as the lead strategist “to see around the corner” to anticipate sensitive situations to protect and maintain brand reputation.
- Social Media & Community Engagement: Oversee the company's social media strategy, ensuring engaging content and fostering a vibrant community around our brand and partner ecosystem, with a clear differentiation between co-branded and standalone consumer content.
- Team Building & Agency Management: Over time, build and mentor a small in-house brand and communications team and manage external PR agencies and freelance contractors to maximize impact and efficiency.
What We Look For
- 8+ years of experience in corporate communications, public relations, or a related field, with at least 3-5 years in a management role at a high-growth technology company.
- Bachelor's degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, English, Design, Branding or a related liberal arts field.
- Proven success in developing and executing integrated communications strategies for both B2B (enterprise) and B2C (consumer) audiences.
- A highly creative and flexible storyteller, with a proven ability to develop and execute out-of-the-box narratives that surprise and delight both partners and consumers.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to distill complex technical concepts into clear, compelling narratives for diverse audiences.
- Strong media relations background with a robust network of contacts in relevant tech, business, and consumer media.
- Experience in crisis communications and issues management. Strategic thinker with a strong ability to connect communications initiatives to broader business objectives.
- Experience across all aspects of marketing; leading teams to drive impact.

Additional information
The compensation range for this position is: $186,400 - $198,050. This range reflects the low and high end of the range Skylo reasonably and generally expects to pay the hired candidate in this role.
