About the Role:

We’re looking for a Director of Data Engineering to lead and scale our data platform organization at Hims & Hers. This role is focused on execution, operational excellence, and delivery —taking our modern Data Platform migration from GCP/GBQ to AWS/Databricks and Unified Event Tracking (UET) systems across the finish line to full adoption and business impact.

You’ll lead two squads — Platform Engineering and Customer Events Engineering — responsible for building, maintaining, and optimizing the foundational data infrastructure and event tracking ecosystem that powers analytics, personalization, and marketing automation across Hims & Hers.

You’ll partner closely with Product, Legal, Analytics, CRM, and Marketing teams to ensure event data is accurate, compliant, and standardized across all systems. Your leadership will ensure our data platform and event pipelines are reliable, performant, and cost-efficient, while fostering a culture of engineering excellence and cross-functional collaboration.

You Will:

  • Lead and scale two squads — Platform Engineering (core data infrastructure) and Customer Events Engineering (Unified Event Tracking & instrumentation)

  • Drive the execution and completion of Data Platform V2.0 and UET rollout, ensuring system reliability, performance, and full adoption across business domains

  • Oversee the Unified Event Tracking framework, delivering a single, standardized system for event collection, schema management, and observability across CRM, Marketing, and Product teams

  • Partner with Marketing, Product, Engineering and CRM stakeholders to design and govern customer event instrumentation, ensuring accurate, privacy-compliant, and scalable data collection

  • Oversee platform stability and efficiency across ingestion, transformation, and serving layers, ensuring high data quality and operational consistency

  • Implement best-in-class engineering practices — CI/CD for data, automated testing, lineage tracking, observability, and SLAs

  • Coach and develop tech leads, and senior ICs, fostering ownership, technical depth, and accountability

  • Champion data governance and compliance, ensuring all event and user data meets privacy, security, and policy standards

  • Optimize Databricks compute and cost, improving workload placement, performance, and transparency

  • Collaborate with cross-functional partners to prioritize delivery, remove blockers, and align technical execution with business timelines

  • Build and maintain strong partnerships across Engineering, Product, Analytics, Engineering and Marketing to ensure delivery of high-impact data initiatives

You Have:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field

  • 15+ years of experience in software or data engineering, with deep expertise in distributed systems, pipelines, and event data architecture

  • 10+ years of engineering leadership experience, managing managers and senior technical leads across multiple teams

  • Proven success leading large-scale data platform and event tracking initiatives through completion

  • Strong technical command of SQL and Python, with practical experience using Databricks, Spark, Kafka/Confluent, dbt, Airflow/Astronomer, Terraform, GTM, GA, AWS, and related data technologies

  • Proven track record of leading technical strategy, making architectural decisions, and delivering large-scale systems with cross-functional impact

  • Hands-on experience with event data architectures, schema management, and analytics enablement

  • Demonstrated ability to drive operational excellence — ensuring reliability, performance, and cost optimization at scale

  • Experience building and developing high-performing, inclusive teams and coaching senior engineers and EMs

  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to influence both technical and executive audiences

  • Strong program execution skills — able to align multiple teams, track progress, and deliver predictable outcomes

Nice to Have:

  • Experience building or scaling Unified Event Tracking systems, CDPs, or customer data pipelines

  • Familiarity with privacy and compliance frameworks (HIPAA, SOC2, GDPR, etc.) for user and event data

  • Background working with Marketing, Product, or CRM data ecosystems (e.g., Braze, Amplitude, GrowthBook, Segment)

  • Experience with real-time data streaming, data quality frameworks, and feature stores for personalization and ML use cases

  • Proven track record in cost optimization, workload management, or vendor negotiations for cloud data infrastructure

  • Prior experience in regulated or high-compliance industries (e.g., healthcare, fintech)

Our Benefits (there are more but here are some highlights):

  • Competitive salary & equity compensation for full-time roles

  • Unlimited PTO, company holidays, and quarterly mental health days

  • Comprehensive health benefits including medical, dental & vision, and parental leave

  • Employee Stock Purchase Program (ESPP)

  • 401k benefits with employer matching contribution

  • Offsite team retreats

We are committed to building a workforce that reflects diverse perspectives and prioritizes ethics, wellness, and a strong sense of belonging. If you're excited about this role, we encourage you to apply—even if you're not sure if your background or experience is a perfect match.
