About Freshpaint:

Healthcare is a $4+ trillion industry in the U.S. alone, and it’s undergoing a rapid digital transformation.

Hospitals, digital health companies, and life sciences organizations rely on analytics and advertising tools to reach patients, measure performance, and grow. But those tools weren’t built for regulated healthcare data. That creates real compliance risk and forces teams to choose between growth and privacy.

Freshpaint eliminates that trade-off.

We’re a privacy-first data platform that helps healthcare organizations use modern marketing and analytics tools without exposing protected health information (PHI). Freshpaint sits between a company’s website or app and the third-party tools they use, automatically detecting and controlling sensitive data before it’s shared.

In short: we let healthcare teams move fast, safely.

Backed by Top Investors

Freshpaint is backed by some of the most respected names in technology, including:

  • Y Combinator (OpenAI, Stripe, Airbnb, Coinbase, DoorDash)

  • Intel Capital (Broadcom, Astera Labs, VMware, RedHat, MongoDB)

We’ve raised tens of millions of dollars in funding to build the privacy infrastructure layer for healthcare’s digital future.

Who we’re looking for

We're looking for a pragmatic, high-judgment legal leader to serve as Freshpaint's Director, Legal. You bring strong expertise in commercial technology transactions, privacy, and compliance, and you're comfortable serving as a strategic partner to the business, moving quickly in an evolving environment and balancing thoughtful risk management with practical execution. You lead with ownership, direct and respectful communication, and a bias toward delivering meaningful impact quickly.

What you’ll be doing

As Freshpaint's first in-house counsel, you'll build and lead the legal function that supports the company's growth as a privacy-first technology business. Reporting directly to the CEO, you'll advise executives and cross-functional teams on commercial, product, privacy, compliance, employment, corporate, and other legal matters while creating scalable processes for a growing organization. Legal here is a direct driver of revenue, not just a risk function — you'll be working directly in the deal cycle, not reviewing paperwork after the fact. This is a highly visible, hands-on role for a legal operator who enjoys solving challenging problems and shaping the way a company works.

Primary responsibilities

Commercial contracting

  • Own commercial contracting end to end across new business, renewals, expansion, and partner/agency agreements, including technology and data partners.

  • Build practical, scalable contract templates, playbooks, and workflows that let the business move fast without routing every question through Legal.

  • Manage outside counsel and legal spend strategically.

Privacy-by-design counsel

  • Serve as the company's internal advisor on data privacy strategy, embedding with Product and Engineering early so privacy review happens at the design stage, not as a late-stage gate.

  • Advise on privacy, data protection, security, and compliance matters relevant to Freshpaint's products and operations, with healthcare regulatory experience a strong plus.

Liability and risk

  • Act as a trusted thought partner to the CEO and cross-functional leaders on legal risk, always framed around how the business can move forward safely rather than what it can't do.

  • Support corporate governance, financing, equity, employment, IP, and other corporate legal matters as needed.

  • Help develop a proactive, business-first approach to risk management as Freshpaint scales.

Desired skills & experience

  • Juris Doctor degree and active bar membership in at least one U.S. state.

  • In-house legal experience at a technology or SaaS company, ideally at an earlier-stage, fast-moving startup.

  • Strong experience negotiating and managing commercial agreements across the customer and vendor lifecycle.

  • Deep familiarity with privacy, data protection, and technology-related legal issues.

  • A practical, business-oriented approach that balances appropriate risk management with speed, customer needs, and company goals.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to influence senior leaders and collaborate effectively across functions.

  • Demonstrated ability to operate independently, prioritize competing demands, and make progress in an ambiguous, fast-moving environment.

Perks & Benefits

We take care of our team—here’s a peek at what you get when you join:

  • Competitive pay + generous equity (10-year exercise window)

  • Half-day Fridays, every Friday

  • 16 weeks fully paid parental leave (eligible after 6 months; commission-based roles receive 100% base salary during leave)

  • Flexible PTO with a required 2-week minimum

  • Top-tier health, dental & vision (100% covered for you, 80% for dependents)

  • Intentional & engaging company offsites (past trips: Arizona, Jackson Hole, Nashville, New Orleans & more)

And more! Check out our careers page for the full list.
