Job Description

The Linux Foundation is seeking a Director of Marketing Communications to lead the strategy, execution, and performance of integrated marketing, communications, community and content initiatives for the Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF). 

This role is ideal for a senior marketing leader who thrives at the intersection of data-driven strategy, creative storytelling, and open source technology. The ideal candidate combines deep experience in open source technology ecosystems and demonstrated success overseeing marketing teams and working closely with other internal and external stakeholders to meet marketing objectives. 

As a senior leader within the Linux Foundation’s central marketing organization, the Director will work closely with other project leaders to drive the growth and health of the LF’s marketing and communications organization. This person will help to shape how the organization communicates marketing innovation, drives revenue growth, enables staff development and delivers world-class marketing services.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership & Organizational Alignment

  • Oversee marketing strategy for the CNCF, guiding annual planning, SOW development, and campaign execution grounded in clear performance metrics.

  • Partner with senior leadership to ensure strategic cohesion across programs, campaigns, and content pipelines.

  • Build cross-functional alignment through evidence-based decision-making and performance insights.

  • Drive a culture of accountability through measurable outcomes, using analytics to inform strategic investments, priorities, and resourcing.

  • Has a “Player-Coach” mentality where no task is too small to dig in and complete.

Program Leadership and Innovation

  • Integrate data and AI-driven insights into every stage of campaign design—from audience segmentation and messaging to channel optimization and post-campaign analysis.

  • Collaborate with project leads and committees to identify opportunities for growth, retention, and impact.

  • Deliver structured reports and executive summaries that translate data into clear strategic recommendations.
     

Content Strategy & Editorial Excellence

  • Lead a modern content strategy optimized for both human and generative AI audiences—ensuring visibility, accuracy, and discoverability in AI-driven search and synthesis tools.

  • Oversee development of high-impact content that meets editorial-quality standards while serving SEO, performance marketing, and brand objectives.

  • Introduce AI-assisted content workflows that accelerate production, improve consistency, and free teams to focus on high-value storytelling and thought leadership.

  • Continuously test and refine content based on engagement analytics and sentiment insights.
     

Marketing Operations & Performance Management

  • Lead the marketing operations roadmap, ensuring the effective integration of data platforms, automation tools, and AI-enabled analytics.

  • Oversee paid and organic strategies—including performance, ABM, and growth marketing—to optimize ROI of investment.
     

Events & Brand Activation

  • Direct event promotion strategy to achieve measurable results in engagement, and brand awareness.

  • Align pre- and post-event content strategies with overall campaign objectives and performance indicators.

  • Use data to evaluate third-party event ROI and refine global event strategy based on participation insights, community opportunities and lead-generation outcomes.
     

Financial Management & Sustainability

  • Drive financial planning and budgeting for CNCF’s marketing programs, optimizing resource allocation through data-backed decision-making.

  • Identify opportunities for cost optimization and program expansion through performance insights.

  • Secure and justify program budget increases where needed by demonstrating measurable impact and ROI.
     

Stakeholder & Community Relations

  • Build trust-based relationships with project leads, members, contributors, and ecosystem partners.

  • Translate technical and community-driven objectives into compelling, data-supported marketing narratives.

  • Lead enterprise-wide stakeholder management, influencing C-level executives, board members, and external partners through strategic storytelling and reporting.
     

Global Collaboration & Travel

  • Requires periodic domestic and international travel throughout the year for events, leadership summits, and strategic engagements.

Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Communications, or related field (Master’s degree preferred).

  • Experience: 12+ years of experience in content strategy, B2B marketing, or product marketing, preferably in technology or open source.

  • Proven track record building data-driven marketing initiatives and executing campaigns grounded in performance analytics.

  • Demonstrated success leveraging AI tools for efficiency, personalization, and optimization in marketing operations and content creation.

  • Expertise in developer marketing and familiarity with open source community engagement. Knowledge of the CNCF ecosystem preferred.

  • Strong command of marketing tools and platforms.

  • Exceptional writing, storytelling, and executive communication skills.

  • Skilled in leading teams

Additional Information

Salary $160,000 - $171,000 USD
