Build the Digital Infrastructure That Will Transform Homelessness Services in Los Angeles

Role: Director of Product

Location: Los Angeles, California (Hybrid)

Reports to: Chief Executive Officer

This isn't another product management job.

The homelessness system wasn't designed. It evolved.

There are more than 10,000 organizations across the United States working every day to address homelessness. Outreach teams. Shelter operators. Housing providers. Healthcare organizations. Government agencies. Faith communities. Foundations. Volunteers.

Every one of them shares the same mission: helping people move from crisis to stability.

Yet the technology connecting this ecosystem has not kept pace with the urgency of the problem.

Critical information lives in disconnected systems. Referrals are often managed through emails, spreadsheets, and phone calls. Frontline workers spend too much time navigating administrative processes instead of helping people. Shelter operators struggle to coordinate with one another. Government agencies often lack real-time visibility into what's happening on the ground. Valuable data is fragmented across organizations that all want the same outcome but rarely have the infrastructure to work as a coordinated network.

We believe this is one of the greatest unsolved technology challenges in America.

At Better Angels, we are building the shared digital infrastructure that can help transform how homelessness services are delivered—not by replacing the incredible work of nonprofits and government agencies, but by giving them the modern tools they need to work together more effectively.

We believe that just as Salesforce transformed customer relationship management, and Epic transformed how hospitals manage patient information, the homelessness ecosystem deserves a technology platform designed specifically for its unique challenges.

That is our opportunity.

About Better Angels

Better Angels is a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping communities solve homelessness through prevention, services, shelter, housing and technology.

Every day, our teams work alongside outreach workers, shelters, nonprofit providers, healthcare organizations, local governments, and community leaders to improve outcomes for people experiencing homelessness.

Technology is central to that mission.

Our Better Angels Outreach App is already helping frontline outreach teams connect individuals experiencing homelessness with services in real time. Every day, the platform generates new insights into how outreach can become more coordinated, more informed, and more effective.

But we believe we've only begun to realize what's possible.

We are now building Shelter Connect, a next-generation platform designed to modernize shelter operations while connecting shelters, providers, outreach teams, and government agencies through shared workflows, real-time information, and coordinated decision-making.

Our long-term vision extends beyond any single product.

We're building infrastructure. Modern infrastructure that helps communities respond to homelessness as one connected system rather than hundreds of disconnected organizations.

The Opportunity

We're looking for an exceptional product leader to help build that future.

Reporting directly to the CEO, the Director of Product will become one of the primary architects of Better Angels' technology strategy.

You will help determine not only what we build, but why we build it.

You will work alongside the CEO to shape our long-term product vision, collaborate with our CTO and engineering team to execute that vision, and spend significant time in the field with the people who use our technology every day.

You won't simply manage roadmaps. You'll help redesign how homelessness services operate.

You'll spend one day interviewing outreach workers about barriers they encounter in the field. The next day you'll meet with executive directors of homeless service organizations to understand operational challenges.

Later that week you might sit with government leaders discussing regional coordination, then return to work with engineers and designers translating those insights into software that can improve outcomes for tens of thousands of people.

This role requires real systems thinking every bit as much as product thinking.

Our products will not simply automate workflows. They will shape how organizations collaborate, execute and drive impact.

What You'll Build

Better Angels Outreach App

Our Outreach App is already making a meaningful difference for frontline teams. But we're only scratching the surface.

You will help define the next generation of outreach technology by improving field workflows, integrating AI to reduce administrative burden, enabling better coordination between organizations, surfacing real-time information where it matters most, and ensuring that outreach workers spend more time helping people and less time managing paperwork.

Shelter Connect

Shelter Connect represents one of Better Angels' most ambitious initiatives.

Rather than simply building software for shelters, we're reimagining how shelters operate within an interconnected homelessness response system.

You'll work with providers across Los Angeles and beyond to design technology that supports admissions, occupancy management, waitlists, referrals, client communication, reporting, case coordination, resource management, and collaboration across organizations.

More importantly, you'll help create a platform that enables shelters to function as part of a connected ecosystem rather than isolated facilities and speed the movement of unhoused individuals off the streets and into interim housing.

What's Next

The products we know about today won't be the only products we build.

As Better Angels grows, new opportunities will emerge to improve how communities coordinate outreach, shelter operations, housing placement, service delivery, disaster response, resource allocation, analytics, AI-assisted case management, and entirely new models of collaboration.

You'll help define that future.

What You'll Do

Shape Product Strategy

Partner directly with our CEO, CTO and executive team to define Better Angels' long-term technology vision. You will:

  • Develop a multi-year product strategy that balances bold thinking with disciplined execution.
  • Identify opportunities where technology can fundamentally improve how homelessness systems function.
  • Continuously evaluate new technologies—including artificial intelligence—and determine how they can responsibly improve outcomes.
  • Ensure every product contributes to a unified platform rather than becoming yet another standalone application.

Become an Expert in the Homelessness Ecosystem

This role cannot be done from behind a desk.

You'll build trusted relationships with executive leadership, frontline staff, and government partners across the homelessness ecosystem. You'll spend time inside shelters. Shadow outreach teams. Observe case managers. Listen to clients. Meet with Continuums of Care. Collaborate with city and county agencies.

You will understand not only how organizations operate independently—but how they interact with one another. You'll become a leading expert in the intersection between homelessness systems and technology. That understanding will become one of Better Angels' greatest assets.

Lead Product Discovery

Great products begin with understanding problems deeply. You will:

  • Map workflows across outreach, shelter operations, referrals, housing navigation, case management, government reporting, and interagency collaboration.
  • Identify structural friction that prevents organizations from working together effectively.
  • Distinguish between requested features and underlying needs.
  • Design products around real operational challenges rather than assumptions.

Partner with Engineering and Design

You will work closely with our CTO, engineering team, product designer and expert volunteers to transform ideas into world-class software. You will:

  • Prioritize roadmaps.
  • Define requirements.
  • Review designs.
  • Guide implementation.
  • Make thoughtful tradeoffs between usability, scalability, speed, and technical complexity.
  • Champion exceptional user experience in every product decision.

Lead Implementation

Building great software isn't enough. Organizations must successfully adopt it.

You'll lead implementation of Better Angels' technology across nonprofit providers, shelter operators, municipalities, counties, and government agencies. You will help entire communities adopt a new way of working together.

You'll develop implementation frameworks, training programs, onboarding methodologies, customer success processes, and long-term partnership strategies. You'll ensure organizations don't simply install our software; they will transform the way they work.

Measure What Matters

For this mission, success isn't measured by downloads. Or clicks. Or monthly active users.

Success is measured by whether communities work together more effectively. Whether outreach workers spend more time helping people. Whether shelters operate more efficiently. Whether referrals happen faster. Whether organizations share better information.

Whether we are moving more people off the streets and into interim and permanent housing.

Human metrics that matter.

Who You Are

You're an exceptional product leader, but even more importantly, you're a systems thinker. You enjoy solving complex problems involving people, organizations, incentives, and technology. That means:

  • You know that the best products come from curiosity rather than assumptions.
  • You ask thoughtful questions.
  • You listen carefully.
  • You earn trust.
  • You care about details without losing sight of the larger vision.
  • You're energized by ambiguity because you see it as an opportunity to create clarity.

You're equally comfortable presenting strategy to executives, facilitating client workshops, sketching product concepts with designers, debating implementation details with engineers, and standing beside frontline staff to understand how work actually happens.

Most of all, you're motivated by the opportunity to build technology that creates meaningful, measurable impact in people's lives.

Qualifications

Required

  • 8+ years of experience leading product strategy and product development for complex software platforms.
  • A demonstrated track record of building products from vision through successful implementation.
  • Experience with enterprise software, AI-enabled software, workflow platforms, GovTech, HealthTech, civic technology, logistics platforms, or similarly complex systems.
  • Exceptional customer discovery and product strategy skills.
  • Outstanding communication and relationship-building abilities.
  • Experience leading cross-functional teams across product, engineering, and design.
  • Experience working directly with executive leadership on company strategy.
  • Passion for Better Angels' mission and a desire to solve extraordinarily difficult problems.

Preferred

  • Experience implementing enterprise software across multiple organizations.
  • Experience working with government agencies, nonprofits, healthcare systems, or public-sector organizations.
  • Familiarity with homelessness services, housing systems, healthcare delivery, or case management.
  • Experience bringing AI capabilities into operational software in thoughtful, practical ways.

Why Better Angels?

Every generation of technologists has the opportunity to help solve defining challenges. Some build better ways to shop. Some build better ways to communicate. Some build better ways to move money.

This generation has an opportunity to rethink how communities care for their most vulnerable neighbors.

The products you help build won't optimize advertising. They'll help outreach workers connect with people in crisis. They'll help shelters operate more effectively. They'll strengthen collaboration across hundreds of organizations. They'll help governments make better decisions and get more results.

Most importantly, they'll help more people move off the streets.

We know this role isn't for everyone.

It requires humility, curiosity, empathy and intellectual rigor. It requires a willingness to spend as much time listening as designing and the belief that technology should make institutions work better for the people they serve.

But if you've spent your career building products and are looking for the opportunity to apply those skills to one of society's most important challenges, this may be the most meaningful work you'll ever do.

Come help us build the infrastructure that will transform our city and tens of thousands of lives.

Better Angels - solving homelessness together.
