Director of Software Development, Developer Experience

About Slice

Ilir Sela started Slice with the belief that local pizzerias deserve all of the advantages of major franchises without compromising their independence. Starting with his family’s pizzerias, we now empower tens of thousands of restaurants with the technology, services, and collective power that owners need to better serve their digitally minded customers and build lasting businesses. We’re growing and adding more talent to help fulfil this valuable mission. That’s where you come in.

The Role

We're looking for an experienced Engineering Director to lead our Developer Experience organisation, helping hundreds of engineers build, test, deploy and operate software efficiently and reliably.

You'll lead multiple engineering teams responsible for our internal developer platform, infrastructure, CI/CD systems, engineering tooling, and cloud platform. Your mission will be to remove friction from the software development lifecycle, improve developer productivity, and ensure our platform can scale alongside the business.

You'll partner closely with Product, Security, Infrastructure, Engineering leadership and developers across the company to define technical strategy, prioritize investments, and deliver platform capabilities that enable teams to move faster without compromising reliability or security.

This role balances technical leadership, people management and organisational influence. While you won't be writing production code every day, you'll be expected to provide technical direction, make architectural decisions, coach engineering managers and senior engineers, and help shape the future of our engineering organisation.

The Team

You'll lead a group of engineering managers and senior engineers across our Developer Experience organisation. The teams own our Kubernetes platform, CI/CD pipelines, internal developer tooling, cloud infrastructure, observability platform and engineering productivity initiatives.

Our engineers are distributed across North America, the UK and Eastern Europe. We value ownership, thoughtful technical decision making, continuous improvement and strong collaboration across time zones. As a leader, you'll help build an environment where engineers can do their best work while continuously improving the systems that power Slice.

The Winning Recipe

We're looking for a technical leader who enjoys building high-performing engineering organisations as much as building great technology.

The core competencies this role calls for:

  • Proven experience leading multiple engineering teams or engineering managers in a fast-growing technology organisation.

  • Strong technical background in backend systems, cloud infrastructure or platform engineering, with the credibility to influence architectural decisions.

  • Experience building and scaling internal developer platforms, engineering tooling or infrastructure organisations.

  • Strong understanding of cloud-native technologies including Kubernetes, AWS, Docker and modern CI/CD practices.

  • Experience defining engineering strategy, setting technical direction and successfully delivering large cross-functional initiatives.

  • Passion for improving developer productivity through automation, standardisation and self-service platforms.

  • Excellent coaching and mentoring skills with a track record of growing engineering managers and senior technical talent.

  • Comfortable working in a remote-first, globally distributed organisation.

  • Exceptional communication skills with the ability to influence stakeholders across engineering, product and executive leadership.

  • Data-driven approach to measuring engineering effectiveness through metrics such as deployment frequency, lead time, reliability and developer satisfaction.

The Extras

Working at Slice comes with a comprehensive set of benefits, but here are some of the unexpected highlights:

  • Access to healthcare plans

  • Flexible working hours

  • Generous time off policies

  • £200 per annum employee wellbeing allowance

  • Market-leading maternity and paternity schemes

The Hiring Process

Here's what you can expect from our hiring process if your candidacy progresses smoothly. We move quickly and strive for a fast turnaround from the final interview to the offer.

  • 30 minute introductory meeting with your Recruiter

  • Engineering Leadership Interview

  • Technical Strategy & Systems Discussion

  • Cross-Functional Leadership Interview

  • Executive Interview

  • Offer!
