Join Carbon, a trailblazer in Additive Manufacturing technology, as our Head of Software Engineering. This role calls for a visionary leader capable of merging advanced software solutions with cutting-edge manufacturing processes and tools to redefine the production of high-value parts at scale. Our customers are producing millions of parts per month with our technology, with most of those parts being unique and many of them customized using powerful automated software tools we develop and provide. In this role, you will oversee critical development projects that integrate software with hardware, design tools with production, and large factories with our cloud infrastructure to achieve unprecedented manufacturing capabilities in a multi-faceted marketplace.

This role is located in our Sunnyvale office location and is onsite 5 days a week. 

You will...

  • Lead and grow the software engineering organization, focusing on high-level strategy, technical architecture, and team management while being comfortable digging into and understanding the underlying code and infrastructure throughout the stack.
  • Strategize and execute on the vision for automating custom part design and preparation in a complex ecosystem involving customers, data providers, and component manufacturers.
  • Drive continuing improvements to the value of our subscription-based hardware by improving performance, UX, reliability, diagnostics, etc.
  • Ensure that the tools used by the software development team are evolving and improving with a focus on the team’s productivity and quality of life.
  • Collaborate closely with executive leadership and Product Management to align engineering initiatives with broader business objectives, ensuring seamless integration and functionality across all platforms.
  • Enhance and scale our existing architecture that supports diverse applications, from dental products to automotive parts to customized sports equipment, where our software is critical to rapid product development and delivery to the end customers.
  • Ensure high availability and reliability of services that factories around the globe depend on, minimizing the impact of outages on production and maintaining stringent performance and cost management standards.

You have...

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or related field, with experience developing and delivering innovative software-enabled hardware products along with cloud-based software solutions. 
  • Familiarity with a broad range of technologies, with examples including AWS, Linux, C++, Kubernetes, Terraform, React, WebGL, PostgreSQL, ElasticSearch, and Bazel.
  • Proven leadership experience, ideally within the manufacturing or similar tech-driven industries, with the ability to inspire and manage a diverse team.
  • Strong strategic and analytical skills, with a track record of leading the development of software solutions that power hardware and software used in commercial or industrial settings.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to drive toward clarity and simplicity.

At Carbon, we look at the person holistically and carefully consider a wide range of factors when determining salary. The compensation bracket for this position is $240,800 - $478,200 (per year). In order to maintain equitable internal pay practices, we aim to hire new employees near the midpoint of $301,000 to $398,500, taking into account your experience, work location, certifications, and the unique skills you bring to the role. If you are not based in our Sunnyvale or Santa Clara office, the range above will be adjusted for the geographical differential associated with your actual work location.
