Snapshot

At Google DeepMind, we’re a team of scientists, engineers, machine learning experts and more, working together to advance the state of the art in artificial intelligence. We use our technologies for widespread public benefit and scientific discovery, and collaborate with others on critical challenges, ensuring safety and ethics are the highest priority. We don’t set limits based on what others think is possible or impossible. We drive ourselves and inspire each other to push boundaries and achieve ambitious goals.

The Area: Gemini App

The Gemini App is at the forefront of the AI revolution, bringing helpful, generative AI experiences to users across the globe. We are seeking a visionary Design Leader to lead the strategy that will define the future of our product.

The Role

In this critical role, you will be responsible for defining and visioning the user experience, driving design excellence, and fostering a culture of innovation across Gemini. You will work closely with product management, engineering, and research teams to deliver an intuitive, powerful, and aesthetically pleasing experience for the needs of users globally.

The Distinguished Designer is the technical soul of the Gemini interface. You are responsible for the bridge between cutting-edge machine learning and pixel-perfect mobile implementation. You will architect the systems that allow Gemini to feel "as fast as thought" while maintaining world-class stability and performance.

Key responsibilities:

  • Architecting the AI-UI Bridge: Design the technical frameworks for iOS and Android that handle non-deterministic AI outputs (streaming audio/visuals) with zero jitter and maximum fluidity.
  • Performance Engineering: Own the "Gold Standard" for mobile UI latency. You will optimize rendering and state management to handle complex multimodal requests without compromising battery life or device thermals.
  • AI-Augmented Tooling: Build and deploy internal "Design-to-Code" pipelines that allow the design team to use Gemini to automate UI generation and live-model prototyping.
  • Technical North Star: Establish UX best practices for emerging technologies or ambiguous problem spaces. Mentor senior individual contributors and engineers at the intersection of UI development and AI inference.
About You

In order to set you up for success,  we look for the following skills and experience:

  • Minimum: 15+ years of experience in User Experience / Design, with experience establishing UX best practices for emerging technologies or ambiguous problem spaces.
  • Technical Mastery: Expert-level mastery of mobile frameworks (Flutter, Swift, Kotlin, or React Native) and front-end performance for real-time applications.
  • Leadership: Demonstrated track record of shipping and scaling flagship consumer applications across platforms.

Preferred background includes one or any combination of the following:

  • Master's degree or Ph.D. in a design-related field.
  • Experience with AI/ML and agentic technologies; Depth and breadth of knowledge that enables ideation and development of creative solutions.

Note: In the event your application is successful and an offer of employment is made to you, any offer of employment will be conditional on the results of a background check, performed by a third party acting on our behalf. For more information on how we handle your data, please see our Applicant and Candidate Privacy Policy
