Company Background:

Specter is creating a software-defined “control plane” for the physical world. We are starting with protecting American businesses by granting them ubiquitous perception over their physical assets.

To do so, we are creating a connected hardware-software ecosystem on top of multi-modal wireless mesh sensing technology. This allows us to drive down the cost and time of deploying sensors by 10x. Our platform will ultimately become the perception engine for a company’s physical footprint, enabling real-time perimeter visibility and autonomous operations management.

Our co-founders Xerxes and Philip are passionate about empowering our partners in the fast approaching world of physical AI and robotics. We are a small, fast growing team who hail from Anduril, Tesla, Uber, and the U.S. Special Forces.

Role + Responsibilities:

Specter is hiring an electrical engineer to design and develop robust sensor and compute systems, optimize product manufacturing, and assist with build/manufacturing programs.

Responsibilities include:
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with mechanical, firmware, and systems teams to define system-level requirements

  • Own end-to-end design of embedded controllers, including schematics, layout, and hardware validation

  • Perform root cause analysis and troubleshooting on electrical and system-level issues

  • Support in-field hardware deployments through remote diagnostics and failure analysis

  • Lead research and prototyping of new technologies

Qualifications:
  • 3+ years of electronic hardware design experience

  • Experience working cross-functionally to define system architecture

  • Experience shipping high volume product (automotive and/or aerospace preferred) and working with contract manufacturers

  • Experience with board-level debugging, oscilloscopes, multimeters, logic analyzers, etc.

  • Working knowledge of embedded systems, including microcontrollers/processors, sensors, and communication protocols (I2C, SPI, Ethernet, etc.)

Preferred Skills:
  • Experience managing hardware development through the full product lifecycle

  • Working knowledge of power electronics design and battery management systems

  • Experience working with and evaluating contract manufacturers

  • Familiarity with scripting or firmware for hardware test automation (e.g., Python, embedded C)

  • Experience with AC/DC conversion and 120V AC systems (preferred, not required)

Design Tool Proficiency:
  • Altium Designer (required)

  • SPICE simulation tools (LTspice, QSpice, or equivalent)

  • Python (preferred for scripting, automation, or data analysis)

What you need to know about the San Francisco Tech Scene

San Francisco and the surrounding Bay Area attracts more startup funding than any other region in the world. Home to Stanford University and UC Berkeley, leading VC firms and several of the world’s most valuable companies, the Bay Area is the place to go for anyone looking to make it big in the tech industry. That said, San Francisco has a lot to offer beyond technology thanks to a thriving art and music scene, excellent food and a short drive to several of the country’s most beautiful recreational areas.

Key Facts About San Francisco Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 365,500; 13.9% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Google, Apple, Salesforce, Meta
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, cloud computing, fintech, consumer technology, software
  • Funding Landscape: $50.5 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Sequoia Capital, Andreessen Horowitz, Bessemer Venture Partners, Greylock Partners, Khosla Ventures, Kleiner Perkins
  • Research Centers and Universities: Stanford University; University of California, Berkeley; University of San Francisco; Santa Clara University; Ames Research Center; Center for AI Safety; California Institute for Regenerative Medicine
