Every day, our products move millions of people as we aim to make driving safer, smarter, and more connected, shaping the future of transportation on a global scale.
Join the ARC Robotics Technology Development team and help develop the next generation of advanced robotics for manufacturing. As a Mechanical Systems Engineer on the ARC Robotics Technology Development team, you will enable new automation initiatives across GM Manufacturing Operations. This role focuses on robotic tooling, fixtures, mechanisms, and machine hardware that can be built, tested, validated, and scaled for plant use.
Justification
Critical skills needed to support strategic automation initiatives and technology development across GM Manufacturing Operations.
Work Arrangement
Hybrid. This role requires the employee to be onsite an average of three days per week.
The Role
The ARC Robotics Technology Development team develops advanced robotics and automation solutions for GM Manufacturing Operations. The team bridges concept development and real manufacturing applications by creating technologies that solve practical plant problems and are ready for validation and deployment.
As an Engineer focused on Mechanical Systems, you will design and develop the core mechanical hardware for robotic and automated systems. This includes end effectors, fixtures, structural assemblies, guarding concepts, and custom mechanisms. You will work closely with electrical, integration, simulation, and manufacturing teams to ensure designs are functional, manufacturable, serviceable, and ready for testing.
What You Will Do
• Design mechanical systems for robotic and automated manufacturing applications • Develop concepts and detailed designs that meet safety, quality, throughput, and maintainability requirements • Create CAD models, drawings, and engineering documentation • Support prototype builds, fabrication, assembly, and design iteration • Select and integrate actuators, guides, bearings, sensors, pneumatics, and related hardware • Perform engineering analysis related to strength, stiffness, tolerance, motion, and failure risk • Collaborate with electrical and integration engineers to ensure complete system compatibility • Support lab commissioning and plant trials by troubleshooting hardware issues and improving designs • Work with suppliers, integrators, and internal stakeholders to mature concepts into deployable solutions • Evaluate new mechanical technologies that can improve automation capability across GM
Your Skills and Abilities
• Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field • Strong foundation in machine design, structural design, and mechanism development • Proficiency in Siemens NX or similar CAD tools • Experience with tooling, fixturing, EOAT, or custom automation hardware • Hands on experience with prototype builds and design refinement • Strong analytical and structured problem solving skills • Ability to work across cross functional engineering teams • Strong written and verbal communication skills • Willingness to support lab and plant testing
What Will Give You a Competitive Advantage
• Advanced degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field • Experience in automotive manufacturing, robotics, or industrial automation • Background in fixture design, weld tooling, fastening tooling, or material handling systems • Experience with tolerance analysis, FEA, or motion system design • Track record of taking mechanical systems from concept through validation
