The Defense Innovation Unit (DIU) is a Department of War (DoW) organization focused exclusively on accelerating the adoption of commercial technology throughout the military and growing the national security innovation base. As the Department’s gateway to leading technology companies across the country, DIU is focused on rapid prototyping, fielding, and scaling of commercial solutions that can save lives, lead to new operational concepts, increase efficiency, and save taxpayer dollars. 

DIU has a variety of missions which bring academic and private sector solutions to national security problems. To accomplish this mission, we seek a wide variety of backgrounds including military experience, high technology product development and leadership, operations expertise, and general program management experience.
Federal Civilian Positions in Engineering/Technical Expert: Serve as a critical technical authority supporting the Defense Innovation Unit (DIU) mission. This role provides high-level technical expertise to drive program management and other essential activities focused on integrating cutting-edge commercial technologies into the Department of War (DoW) in one or more of the following areas:

  • Technical Leadership: Provide subject matter expertise across a wide range of technical fields and disciplines, including research, design, development, modification, and the transition of innovative commercial technologies.

  • Commercial Technology Engineering: Adapt, engineer, and apply emerging commercial technologies to secure a definitive warfighting advantage for DoW operations.

  • Industry Collaboration: Engage and collaborate with a large, diverse ecosystem of non-traditional industry partners and commercial tech hubs.

  • Technology Transition: Work directly with Military Departments and Combatant Commands to rigorously evaluate, prototype, and transition successful technological solutions for broader Department of War deployment.

Positions may be located in Mountain View, CA or in the National Capital Region.
