Are you looking for a role in a company that's solving one of the greatest challenges of our lifetime? Ophelia helps people end their opioid use and restore their quality of life with respect for their time and dignity. Our mission is to make evidence-based treatments for opioid use disorder (OUD) accessible to everyone... and we're looking to bring more people onto our team to help us achieve it.

Ophelia is a venture-backed, healthcare startup that helps individuals with OUD by providing FDA-approved medication and clinical care through a telehealth platform. Our approach is discreet, convenient, and affordable. We've been successfully operating in 14 states for almost six years and we're excited to continue our growth. We are a team of physicians, scientists, entrepreneurs, researchers and White House advisors, backed by leading technology and healthcare investors working to re-imagine and re-build OUD treatment in America.
About the Role

As an Engineering Manager I at Ophelia, you’ll play a key role in developing innovative, compliant solutions to support our mission of treating opioid use disorder through telehealth. You'll be a hands-on technical leader and manage a team of 2-5 full-stack software engineers who build and maintain our core web applications written in Typescript, React, and Firebase on GCP. The estimated split between hands-on code and leadership responsibilities is 50-70% hands-on to 50-30% leadership. You’ll ensure that your team maintains the highest quality standards across all projects, improve code architecture, and foster a culture of creativity, collaboration, and continuous improvement. Your work will have a direct impact on patients, clinicians, and our ability to scale.

In this role, you’ll mentor and develop the engineers on your team, promote a culture of innovation and excellence, and be a tech lead who works side-by-side with them through the full product cycle—from inception to results—making direct code contributions and taking responsibility for your team’s work quality and delivery goals. You’ll collaborate closely with your Product and Design counterparts, as well as various cross-functional teams, including clinicians and non-technical stakeholders, to ensure our products meet the needs of both users and the business. Flexibility will be key, as you will help tackle ambiguous challenges in a fast-evolving, growth-stage company.

Other responsibilities include continuously improving our systems and team processes, while advocating for projects that help improve code architecture, quality, and performance and drive business results, through insightful use of AI technologies and traditional approaches. With support from your Director, peers, and our People team, you’ll manage the performance evaluation of your team members, including promotions, performance improvement plans, and, when necessary, termination. Your role also involves staying up-to-date on emerging industry trends and technologies, including but not limited to AI in our products and development processes, bringing new ideas to drive innovation in product design and development.

Together, we will help hard-to-reach individuals treat their opioid dependence. While direct experience in this treatment area is not mandatory, knowledge of the healthcare space, including understanding health outcomes, benchmarks, systems, and regulatory compliance (HIPAA), is highly beneficial.

Responsibilities
  • Exhibit strong technical leadership by providing input on the team’s roadmap, feedback on project scope—seeking to deliver incremental wins—and work estimates to ensure the team reliably meets its delivery goals. Uphold a high technical bar through clear technical designs, opinionated architecture choices, thorough code reviews, and good test coverage.
  • Mentor and develop the engineers on your team, fostering a culture of technical excellence, creativity, collaboration, and continuous improvement, while cultivating a positive and inclusive team environment aligned with Ophelia’s core values.
  • Develop across the stack, with an emphasis on increasing capabilities of front-end apps, delivering impact wherever the team needs. Our core technologies are Typescript, React, and Firebase (e.g., Firestore, Authentication, Remote Config) in Google Cloud Platform.
  • Lead with flexibility and adaptability to navigate ambiguous, new challenges in a growth-stage company, learning from the past, asking questions, and rapidly evolving team approaches and focus as business needs change.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally in both sourcing new ideas and implementing improvements from our amazing community of clinicians and our care teams. You’ll be encouraged to ask even “dumb” questions as you work directly with our technical and non-technical teams to build the next generation of our products.
  • Stay current with industry trends, emerging technologies (including AI tooling), and best practices to drive innovation and excellence in product design and implementation.
Skills & Competencies
  • 6+ years experience in engineering, with the ability to own and delegate complex projects, work with technical and non-technical stakeholders, and handle post-rollout feedback and iteration, ideally with a portion at a growth stage company with bespoke systems. Strong opinions around software architecture are a plus.
  • ~1 year experience managing, or exposure and interest in people management including responsibility for performance management, promotions, and terminations. You should have experience mentoring others, preferably with examples of successful coaching toward promotion and/or providing corrective feedback.
  • Product-minded orientation, with an eye towards the customer and a habit of seeking the tightest scope (MVP) that will deliver solutions to business problems quickly.
  • Experience in true agile practice including highly collaborative development (e.g., EPD leadership), value-driven with hypotheses and experiment design, and an overall iterative development mindset.
  • Exceptional communication and time management skills, including the ability to communicate technical concepts and progress with teammates and stakeholders, prioritize and delegate tasks effectively, accurately estimate effort (LoE), adapt to unexpected events rapidly, switch context quickly, and guard focused coding time.
  • Passionate about our mission to make evidence-based addiction treatment universally accessible.
  • [nice to have] Background in a regulated industry, ideally healthcare—telehealth is a big plus—and can bring a thoughtful approach to compliant, private, secure software that remains nimble and modern.
Our Benefits Include:
  • Remote work anywhere in the United States
  • Competitive medical, vision, and health insurance (many plans are fully covered for the employee!)
  • 20 days of PTO per year with tenure increases at 2 and 5 years! (5 weeks of PTO at 2 years; 6 weeks of PTO at 5 years)
  • 10 company holidays
  • Work From Home Stipend
  • 401k Contribution Platform
  • Additional benefits offered through our benefits provider such as life insurance, short and long term disability, financial wellness, virtual primary care, among others!

  • Compensation is dynamic at Ophelia: as long as the company performs well and meets our targets, there will be opportunities for increased compensation annually. We’re happy to discuss this approach and our bands if you have questions during the interview process.
