About the Team

The Monetization team is a new cross-functional group working across engineering, product, research, and design to build the foundational systems that will help OpenAI scale access to intelligence responsibly. Our mission is to develop user-first, privacy-preserving monetization products—including next-generation ads experiences—that strengthen user trust, unlock economic opportunity, and support OpenAI’s long-term innovation.

Monetization plays a critical role in enabling OpenAI to continue pushing the boundaries of AI capabilities while ensuring the benefits of AGI are broadly shared. We believe monetization must be aligned with user value, uphold rigorous privacy and safety standards, and sustain a healthy ecosystem of developers and businesses.

This team operates in a greenfield environment and moves quickly through prototyping, experimentation, and iterative deployment. We partner closely with Product, Design, and Research to bring research breakthroughs into real-world systems at global scale.

About the Role

We’re looking for an experienced Engineering Manager to lead a high-performing team that will build the core monetization and ads systems at OpenAI. This is a foundational role responsible for hiring, developing, and leading a world-class engineering team while shaping the technical strategy and execution for one of the company’s most impactful new initiatives.

You’ll own the roadmap for 0→1 monetization infrastructure, to build the most robust, safe, and scalable infra. You will collaborate deeply with product, design, and research to define the future of monetized AI experiences—and ensure these systems uphold OpenAI’s highest standards for safety, privacy, and policy alignment.

This role is exclusively based in our San Francisco HQ. We offer relocation assistance to new employees.

In this role, you will:

  • Build, lead, and develop a diverse, high-performing engineering team working across backend, full-stack, and systems engineering

  • Define and own the technical strategy, roadmap, and execution plan for OpenAI’s core monetization and ads systems

  • Guide the architecture of distributed systems that operate at massive scale and require high reliability, privacy, and performance

  • Collaborate with Product, Research, and Design partners to define product requirements, evaluate tradeoffs, and bring new experiences to market

  • Drive 0→1 product development through rapid prototyping, experimentation, and iterative deployment

  • Ensure your team operates effectively, maintains high engineering rigor, and consistently delivers against ambitious goals

  • Coach and mentor engineers to elevate their impact and grow to their full potential

  • Build processes and culture that enable fast learning, high trust, and responsible innovation

  • Ensure all monetization systems meet the highest standards for safety, privacy, fairness, and policy compliance

You might thrive in this role if you:

  • Have 7+ years of experience managing high-performance engineering teams in fast-paced, rapidly shifting environments

  • Have 10+ years of experience building, scaling, and operating distributed systems at large scale

  • Have a track record of building and scaling critical systems with strong reliability, performance, and safety constraints

  • Are skilled at defining technical roadmaps, setting long-term direction, and navigating ambiguous product spaces

  • Care deeply about people leadership, coaching, and helping engineers achieve peak performance

  • Bring strong product intuition and can work across Product, Design, and Research to shape new user experiences

  • Thrive in 0→1 environments where strategy, architecture, and execution all need to be defined from scratch

  • Communicate clearly, think holistically, and make decisions grounded in both user needs and long-term sustainability

  • Bonus: Bring experience collaborating in AI/ML, ads systems, marketplaces, or other monetization-heavy domains
