About Us
Block is a renovation platform transforming the $500 billion renovation industry. Our mission is to enable millions of homeowners to create spaces they love and thousands of contractors to build thriving businesses. We’re well on our way, serving customers from coast to coast with our technology platform and contractor network.

Overview
Block is looking for an Engineering Manager / Team Lead for our Studio product to lead a small, high-impact team of engineers while remaining deeply hands-on in the codebase. This role is intentionally designed as a 50/50 player-coach position, combining technical leadership, people leadership, and direct product development.

The Studio product empowers homeowners to visualize their dream spaces, receive personalized estimates, and confidently select materials. Built using cutting-edge generative AI, this platform is redefining how renovation planning works. You will play a key role in shaping not only how this product evolves, but how we build products at Block.

At Block, AI isn’t a feature or a layer — it’s part of how software gets built.
This role exists to help scale a product and engineering organization that is expected to use AI as a core part of how products are designed, built, and shipped. You’ll help establish and evolve AI-native, agentic development practices across disciplines, while maintaining a high bar for engineering judgment, product thinking, and craftsmanship.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and develop a team of 4–6 engineers through mentorship, coaching, and regular feedback, fostering a high-trust, inclusive, and delivery-focused environment
  • Spend approximately 50% of your time contributing directly to the codebase, owning meaningful product and platform work alongside your team
  • Partner closely with Product Management, Design, and Engineering Leadership to shape squad goals, scope work, and deliver against the roadmap
  • Actively participate in architectural decisions, technical design discussions, and code reviews to maintain a high bar for quality and maintainability
  • Lead by example in adopting and evolving AI-native, agentic development workflows, integrating them into how the team plans, builds, and ships software
  • Support execution by managing team capacity, prioritization, and delivery while balancing speed, quality, and technical health
  • Collaborate with Engineering Leadership to evolve standards, processes, and best practices across the organization

Qualifications

  • 2+ years in an engineering leadership or senior mentorship role (Engineering Manager, Tech Lead, or equivalent), with 5+ years of hands-on software engineering experience
  • Demonstrated ability to balance people leadership with sustained, meaningful technical contribution
  • Strong product instincts and comfort working across engineering, product, and design to solve complex problems
  • High openness to experimentation, particularly with AI-driven and agentic development tools (e.g., Claude Code, Cursor, Copilot, internal agents)
  • Experience building and scaling modern web applications across front-end and back-end systems
  • Comfort leading and collaborating with a fully remote or distributed team
  • Proficiency with modern web technologies such as TypeScript, React, Next.js, Node.js, and API-driven architectures
  • Experience working on AI-powered products or integrating LLMs, workflows, or chains into production systems
  • Familiarity with our current stack (NextJS, TypeScript, React, Feathers, NodeJS)

Block wants all employees to be supported in their personal and professional development, so we take a comprehensive approach to compensation and benefits. The initial salary for this position is expected to range from $149,000 to $201,000. This is a remote friendly position. Actual compensation will depend on numerous factors such as experience, knowledge and skills, qualifications, location, and other job-related factors.

To further support your growth at our company, Block also offers the following:

  • Earn equity in an early-stage high-growth company
  • Subsidized health insurance, dental, and vision coverage
  • Flexible work environment, with a hybrid schedule and “work from anywhere” time
  • PTO and company holidays
  • 12 weeks universal fully paid family leave
  • 401k retirement savings plan with matching employer contribution
  • HSA with employer contribution & FSA plan
  • Budgeted learning and development stipend
  • Working alongside an ambitious, kind, no-drama team
