Prior editing or tutoring experience and college admissions familiarity are preferred.

We are looking for part-time, experienced essay editors for high school students. We prefer editors with a professional writing background (e.g. print magazines, newspapers, blogging) as well as an academic background in the writing field. We also prefer editors with admissions experience or college counseling experience, though this is not required.

Many of our students apply for top 50 colleges, including UCs and Ivy League schools. We particularly have many aspiring pre-med students (BS/MD programs) and computer science students. Our students are looking for editors to provide detailed, constructive feedback to help them differentiate themselves from other competitive applicants through their voice in their essays.

Essay editors are expected to edit dozens of essays throughout the admissions process, and the busy season for this role is between August and January of each year, with November, December, and January being busiest. Editors are taught how to find essays that have been submitted for editing through Empowerly’s website and provide comprehensive feedback. Essays can come in at any time of day or night, and editors who are available are expected to claim the essay and submit edits within a 24 hour timeframe.

Requirements and Responsibilities

  • Essay Refinement and Editing
  • Asynchronously provide written constructive feedback on drafts, focusing on clarity, structure and coherence, grammar, style, and overall impact.
  • All feedback will be provided by a human as the use of AI is strictly prohibited in the essay editing process.

  • Help students enhance storytelling, strengthen their voice, and convey their intended messages through technical writing skills.

  • Have consistent availability throughout our peak season of August through January to provide feedback to students within 24 hours.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree (Master's preferred) in English, Creative Writing, Journalism, Communications, or a related field.

  • Graduated from a top 50 university in the United States.

  • Background in college admissions preferred, not mandatory.

  • Prior experience in editing, tutoring, or coaching writing, preferably with high school students.

  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and active listening skills.

  • Ability to provide constructive criticism in a supportive, empathetic, and non-judgmental manner.

  • Patience and empathy for students navigating the college application process.

  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
