Job Description:

Y Combinator is seeking a Tax Manager or Assistant Controller to support the tax function primarily, but also learn about and contribute to the broader finance operation and reporting processes. This is an ideal position for a self-starter with a strong work ethic and desire to learn who wants to be an integral part of a Finance team at a unique venture capital firm. You’ll be working directly with the Director of Tax and senior members of the Finance team.

The ideal candidate already has asset management experience (preferably in venture capital) and can bring industry knowledge and insight to their role. Additionally, the candidate is exceedingly well organized, detail-oriented, and enjoys working in a very fast-paced, “hands-on” type of environment. The ability to maintain a high level of professionalism and safeguard the confidential nature of information is crucial to this role.

This is a full-time position. Candidates must live in the SF Bay Area and be available to work onsite at our office located at Pier 70, San Francisco, 2-3 days a week, with flexibility to work from home the rest of the week.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Prepare complex tax workpapers for both quarterly tax estimates and year-end reporting.

  • Manage tax allocation and distribution calculations.

  • Perform tax analysis related to underlying portfolio company acquisitions and restructuring events, and coordinate with external advisors as necessary.

  • Identify QSBS opportunities, collect necessary documentation, and maintain the database

  • Manage the preparation of quarterly financial reporting for multiple fund entities.

  • Review investment and certain fund level transactions in our accounting system and database.

  • Support the capital call and distribution processes.

  • Serve as a utility team player by assisting with various special projects.

Requirements:

Skills:

  • Proficient understanding of U.S. GAAP accounting principles.

  • Solid understanding of U.S. partnership taxation (e.g., hypothetical liquidation waterfall models, 704(b) allocations, tracking interests, etc.)

  • Familiarity with tax implications associated with inbound and outbound restructuring events.

  • Excel mastery is a must, and SQL experience is a plus.

  • Strong aptitude for numbers and accuracy.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Experience:

  • Top performer with heavy tax compliance experience with a focus on venture capital funds.

  • Cross-disciplinary (tax and audit) experience working across different phases of the fund reporting lifecycle.

  • 4+ years of public accounting, private industry, or fund administrator experience.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or related field.

  • CPA or similar qualification preferred.

Compensation: $190,000 - $250,000 (depending on experience). We are open to hiring a Tax Manager or Assistant Controller. Compensation and title will be dependent on the experience and skills of the candidate.
