Job Description

Vanderlande is responsible for the Service & Maintenance of the Baggage Handling System at Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport (SJU) in San Juan, Puerto Rico. We are seeking a Flow Controller I. They are responsible for providing general and specialized support under the supervision of the Manager or Shift Supervisor to maintain the operation of the Baggage Handling System. This position is responsible for safely clearing baggage jams, assisting technicians with mechanical and electrical repairs, manually moving baggage during system outages, manually encoding baggage tags when required, performing general housekeeping activities, and monitoring and assisting the flow of baggage through critical areas of the system.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Exercise safe working practices at all times, demonstrating and complying with all Company safety policies, including but not limited to personal protection equipment and following Lock Out Tag Out (LOTO) procedures.
  • Clear baggage jams and respond to trouble calls in the Baggage Handling System.
  • Monitor baggage flow throughout the system and assist with maintaining efficient operations.
  • Assist Maintenance Technicians with mechanical and electrical repairs when needed.
  • Manually move baggage during system outages or operational disruptions.
  • Operate manual encode stations and manually encode baggage tags when required.
  • Monitor critical areas of the Baggage Handling System and communicate issues to technicians and supervisors.
  • Maintain cleanliness of the system, including sweeping, housekeeping, collecting trash, cleaning dust and debris, and general housekeeping of areas around the system.
  • Respond in a timely manner to dispatched calls and operational requests.
  • Follow instructions from control room operators, technicians and supervisors regarding operational and maintenance needs.

Required Education and Experience:

  • High School Diploma or GED preferred.
  • Good communication and customer service skills.
  • Attention to detail and ability to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Ability to perform under pressure while providing excellent client service.

Other Requirements:

  • Must be able to attain and sustain an Airport I.D. Badge and all required airport security clearances.
  • Must successfully pass all airport-required background checks and security screenings.
  • Qualified Applicants will not require employer sponsored work authorization now or in the future for employment in the US.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Minimum 1 year working experience in a material handling (baggage handling, warehouse, distribution center, logistics, etc.) environment.
  • Technically inclined, with potential to learn and grow into maintaining material handling systems.
  • Basic Computer skills (Word, Excel).

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work:

  • Full-time position supporting a 24/7 airport operation.
  • Five (5) eight-hour shifts per week.
  • Shift schedules may include:
    • 5:00 AM – 2:00 PM
    • 1:00 PM – 10:00 PM
    • 8:00 PM – 5:00 AM
  • Overtime, weekends and holidays may be required.

Travel:

This position requires no travel.  

Supervisory Responsibility:

This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

Work Environment and Physical Demands:

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job: Unjammers and Manual Encoders work in hangars, in repair stations, or on airfields. They often must meet strict deadlines to maintain flight schedules. Workers frequently bend, stoop, and reach from ladders and scaffolds.  While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. This position is very active and requires standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, crawling, and climbing all day. The employee must frequently lift and/or move items over 50 pounds.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is working with and exposed to the baggage handling system, mechanical parts and vibration. The environment can also be loud because of aircraft engines and equipment.
