Edison Scientific focuses on building and commercializing AI agents for science, and shares FutureHouse’s mission to build an AI Scientist - scaling autonomous research, productizing it, and applying it to critical challenges such as drug development.
RoleWe're looking for an Applied AI Engineer to join the team responsible for building Edison's most powerful AI agents. This isn't a supporting role — half of the public agents on our platform, including Kosmos, our flagship product, came directly out of this team. You'll own the development and maintenance of production agents, work directly with some of the biggest science R&D organizations in the world, and help bring AI into their research and engineering workflows.
This means building agents end-to-end: from early prototyping with customers to shipping and maintaining production systems that scientists rely on daily. You'll collaborate closely with researchers, engineers, and external partners to understand real scientific workflows, identify where AI can have outsized impact, and then build and deploy the solutions yourself.
Responsibilities- Build and own production agents — architect, implement, and maintain the AI agents that power Edison's platform, taking features from prototype through production deployment.
- Partner deeply with customers — work directly with scientists, researchers, and engineering teams at leading R&D organizations to understand their workflows end-to-end and translate real-world needs into high-impact AI-driven solutions.
- Prototype new agents and features — rapidly explore new agent architectures, prompting strategies, and tool integrations in response to customer needs and emerging capabilities.
- Integrate AI into scientific workflows — deploy agents into customer environments, ensuring reliability, usability, and measurable scientific or operational impact.
- Close the feedback loop — capture field insights (pain points, user behavior, unmet needs) and feed them back into product roadmaps to shape future capabilities and accelerate adoption.
- Serve as the technical point-of-contact during deployments, troubleshooting issues in real time and collaborating closely with product, engineering, and research teams.
- 3+ years of professional software engineering experience, ideally as a software engineer, forward-deployed engineer, or technical founder — with production experience shipping systems that real users depend on.
- Experience building LLM-powered tools or applications: prompting, context engineering, agent architectures, evaluation frameworks.
- Strong engineering foundation in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, Data Science, or a related technical field.
- Proficiency in Python and/or TypeScript, with comfort picking up new tools and frameworks quickly.
- The ability to work directly with end users — gathering requirements, translating feedback into technical solutions, and iterating quickly.
- Excellent communication skills; able to interface with engineers, scientists, and external partners with clarity and empathy.
- A scrappy mentality — comfortable wearing multiple hats, building from scratch, driving clarity in ambiguous situations, and doing whatever it takes to ship.
- Deep experience in life sciences, biomedical research, scientific computing, or technical R&D workflows.
- Background in genomics, neuroscience, drug discovery, or materials science.
- Experience building agent systems, tool-use pipelines, or evaluation/benchmarking frameworks for AI applications.
- Contributions to open-source scientific or AI tooling.
- Great office vibes at the Dogpatch (1405 Minnesota St, San Francisco, CA 94107) and we're open to remote across the US since you'll be spending most of your time out at customer sites
- Breakfast and lunch on us, every day you're in the office
- Full healthcare coverage, meaning 100%, for you and your dependents
- $300 every quarter to spend on your wellness
- 401(k) with company matching, because your future matters
- A salary range of $160,000 - $260,000. Where you land depends on your experience and what you bring to the role
- A team of people who genuinely care about what they're building and are fired up about pushing science forward
