Build core product features across Python backend and TypeScript frontend, develop a WebGPU-based rendering engine and canvas, architect AI agents for design generation and editing, and maintain evaluation and RL pipelines. Work across product, graphics, and AI, owning end-to-end technical problems and shipping high-quality user-facing product features.

Most design tools bolt AI onto old workflows. We’re building one where the AI actually does the design work.

Moda is building an AI-native design tool that turns a prompt into fully editable, on-brand visual assets on a real canvas. Slides, social posts, one-pagers, PDFs, diagrams, UI designs — instead of bolting AI onto traditional design software, we’re building a system where an AI agent can generate and edit real visuals on your behalf, while keeping everything editable and under your control.

For this role, we’re looking for a generalist engineer who’s excited to work across product, graphics, and AI. It’s completely fine if you lean more backend, frontend, ML, or systems. What matters is that you like owning hard problems end to end and moving with urgency.

Some of the things you might work on:

  • Contributing core product features across our Python backend and TypeScript frontend

  • Building our rendering engine and canvas stack (WebGPU)

  • Architecting AI agents for design generation and editing, plus maintaining eval and RL pipelines

  • Technical tooling, infrastructure, and internal AI systems that help us move 10x faster

You:

  • Have shipped products used by a lot of people

  • Are able to operate independently and with high urgency

  • Care about product quality and user experience, not just technical elegance

  • (Bonus) Have started a company or joined one very early

  • A note on seniority: We care much more about slope than y-intercept and are open to a broad range of backgrounds and experience levels.

Why us?

You’ll be working on a genuinely new product category at the intersection of AI, graphics, and design software. Teams are already using Moda to create on-brand assets in minutes instead of days, and in some cases replace contractors entirely. The team is small and will stay small, so every engineer has outsized ownership and direct influence on the product and company. You’ll work directly with founders who’ve built companies like Dover and Heap before. We move fast, care deeply about craft, and you’ll ship more in a month here than most engineers ship in a year.

What you need to know about the San Francisco Tech Scene

San Francisco and the surrounding Bay Area attracts more startup funding than any other region in the world. Home to Stanford University and UC Berkeley, leading VC firms and several of the world’s most valuable companies, the Bay Area is the place to go for anyone looking to make it big in the tech industry. That said, San Francisco has a lot to offer beyond technology thanks to a thriving art and music scene, excellent food and a short drive to several of the country’s most beautiful recreational areas.

Key Facts About San Francisco Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 365,500; 13.9% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Google, Apple, Salesforce, Meta
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, cloud computing, fintech, consumer technology, software
  • Funding Landscape: $50.5 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Sequoia Capital, Andreessen Horowitz, Bessemer Venture Partners, Greylock Partners, Khosla Ventures, Kleiner Perkins
