As a Founding Software Engineer, you will build and ship product features for construction workforce management while collaborating closely with founders, influencing product architecture and culture.
The role
Mason ($6.5m raised, NYC-based, fast-growing AI startup) is hiring a Founding Software Engineer to help build the future of workforce management for construction.
This is an early, high-impact role. You’ll work directly with the founders to design, build, and ship core product features that power time tracking, payroll, and compliance for thousands of workers in the field. You’ll have ownership from day one and a direct influence on our product, architecture, and engineering culture.
We’re open to two profiles:
- Full-Stack Engineer (Laravel + Vue) — You’re comfortable working across the stack, with strong experience in PHP (Laravel) and Vue (ideally Vue 3).
- Front-End Engineer (React) — You lean front-end, building fast, intuitive user experiences in React (JavaScript), and are comfortable using AI tools to collaborate with and extend a PHP-based backend owned by the team.
You’ll work directly with Mason's founders:
- CTO has had 3x successful startup exits: last company was YCombinator-backed HR-Tech platform that he built from 0→1 and scaled to processing 8 million+ job applications, with a highly profitable exit
- CEO was previously Chief of Staff at Plaid, scaled Plaid from 500 → 1,200 employees as a member of the management committee overseeing Plaid's 300+ employee GTM org; today, Plaid has been used by 1 in every 2 Americans - let's achieve the same with Mason :)
What You’ll Do
- Build and ship end-to-end product features used by real construction teams every day
- Work closely with the founders to turn customer problems into simple, scalable solutions
- Own major parts of the codebase and help shape our technical architecture
- Move quickly — iterating based on real user feedback from the field
- Leverage AI tools to accelerate development and improve productivity
What We’re Looking For
- Strong product instincts — you care about building things that actually get used
- Ability to operate in a fast-paced, early-stage environment with high ownership
- Comfort using modern AI coding tools (e.g., Claude, ChatGPT, etc.) as part of your workflow
- Clear communication and a bias toward action
- Experience with either:
- PHP (Laravel) + Vue, or
- React (JavaScript) with a willingness to work alongside a PHP backend
Why Mason
- Founding-level impact: help define the product and engineering culture from the ground up
- Work on real, unsolved problems in one of the largest and least-digitized industries
- Build AI-first workflows that replace legacy systems and manual processes
- Competitive compensation + meaningful equity
- NYC-based, venture-backed, and growing quickly
If you want to build something from 0→1 and see your work used in the real world every day, we’d love to talk.
When Applying:
- Only apply via Wellfound. Do not reach out via email/LinkedIn.
- As much as we value AI in our work, please don’t use it at this stage of the process (when writing your introduction or responding to questions).
- We love people who worked on side projects: Make sure to tell us what you shipped outside of work!
