Location

This is a remote, US-based role aligned to the Eastern Time Zone. We have team members located on the East Coast, West Coast, and across Europe. Aligning to Eastern Time provides effective overlap for collaboration and helps bridge teams across these regions.

The Opportunity

As a Frontend Software Engineer II on the ToolHive team, you’ll help build products that give developers a secure, intuitive way to connect AI agents to the systems they depend on. The role includes contributing to our TypeScript-based desktop application and developing a new web application from the ground up. Both platforms provide the chance to influence architecture, shape user experience, and tackle complex interaction challenges.

Collaboration with backend engineers, designers, and product managers is central to the work, ensuring polished, reliable interfaces for MCP server management. The role also involves engaging with our open source community, turning feedback into features that make it easier and safer for developers to bring AI-powered capabilities into production environments.

What Success Looks Like: First 6-12 months
  • Technical Context Gained: You've developed a solid understanding of both the ToolHive desktop architecture and our new web application stack through code reviews, design discussions, and hands-on contributions. You're making meaningful contributions to the codebases and can work independently on standalone features within your first 6 months.
  • ToolHive Feature Delivered: You've designed and shipped a complex feature for either the ToolHive desktop application or new web application that improves the MCP server management experience, while contributing to additional features. Collaborated effectively with backend engineers for API integration and designers for UX validation.
  • Community Engagement Established: You've actively engaged with our open source community through GitHub issues and Discord discussions, converting user feedback into actionable product improvements that were implemented by the team.
  • Team Integration Completed: You've built strong working relationships with engineering, product, and design team members, regularly participating in technical discussions and providing valuable input that influences product decisions.
In This Role, You Will
  • Develop and enhance ToolHive's TypeScript-based desktop application and contribute to building our new enterprise web application for MCP server management
  • Build user interfaces for discovering, deploying, and managing MCP servers with focus on developer experience and ease of use
  • Collaborate closely with backend engineers to design APIs that support MCP server orchestration and client configuration
  • Partner with designers and product managers to translate user requirements into intuitive workflows for managing containerized MCP deployments
  • Engage directly with our open source community through GitHub and Discord, providing support and gathering feedback to inform product decisions
  • Contribute to engineering processes and development practices as our team scales both the desktop and web applications
  • Adopt AI-first development practices, using AI tools to enhance productivity, code quality, and development velocity as part of your everyday workflow
We understand

Not everyone will meet every requirement listed, and that’s perfectly okay. We encourage you to apply regardless of your self-assessment. We value a diverse range of skills and experiences and believe your unique perspective can make a significant impact. We want to hear from you!

Desired Skills & Experience
  • Frontend development experience building complex, multi-feature software products with modern JavaScript/TypeScript and CSS, designed for enterprise or professional users, with an emphasis on maintainable and scalable user interfaces
  • Testing experience with modern testing frameworks such as Playwright for end-to-end testing and/or @testing-library for component testing
  • Desktop application development experience with Electron, Tauri, or similar cross-platform frameworks, or strong willingness to learn these technologies
  • Understanding of containerization and Docker workflows, as ToolHive manages MCP servers running in secure containers
  • API integration skills for working with REST APIs
  • Software development best practices including testing, code review, version control, and continuous integration workflows
  • Problem-solving abilities for debugging complex issues across desktop and web platforms
  • Task decomposition and prioritization for breaking down complex features into simple, manageable steps and prioritizing them effectively with a lean MVP mindset
  • Open source collaboration experience through GitHub contributions, issue management, or community engagement

Base Salary Range: $140,000 - $210,000
