Description:  The General Sales Manager [GSM] position is a second-level, senior sales management role.  In general, the GSM will have multiple District Sales Managers [DSM’s] as direct reports.  Each DSM will, in turn, have multiple Outside Sales Representatives as direct reports.  In addition, GSM’s and/or DSM’s may also have support personnel embedded within their organization reporting either direct or indirectly to them.  The GSM has both revenue and expense accountability and authority (within established corporate guidelines) for the assigned region.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:  GSM responsibilities fall into three general categories:

  • Financial Goals – Achieve monthly and annual revenue and expense goals
  • Personnel Development – Manage corporate processes for Recruitment, On-Boarding, Assessment, Development, Termination, etc. for assigned region
  • Strategic Leadership – Lead the development and execution of an annual strategic action plan or business plan for the region within the guidelines of the Company’s annual revenue and expense plan and the overall Company Strategic Plan.

In addition to these responsibilities, the GSM is expected to work closely with the VP of Sales, as well as the complete VP group and other D-E managers to communicate the progress of the region, as well as, the needs of the region, and achieve overall company objectives.  Teamwork and the ability to work closely and successfully with personnel from all other company functions is a fundamental requirement.



Supervisory Responsibilities:  This role may have multiple supervisory responsibilities including subordinate supervisors.  Potential subordinate roles and groups may include but are not necessarily limited to:


  • District Sales Manger(s) / Sales District(s)
  • Key Account Manager(s)
  • Business Development Representative(s)
  • Dunn Hub Specialist(s)

Education and/or Experience:  Level 6:  Bachelor’s degree (B.A., B.S., B.E.) from an accredited four-year college or university; or one to two years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • MBA preferred
  • Experience with negotiating and fulfilling national customer contacts
  • Experience managing a distributor network or similar channel(s) is preferred

Language Skills:  Level 4:  Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or government regulations; ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals; ability to effective present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers and the general public.


Mathematical Skills:  Level 4:  Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry.  Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.


Reasoning Ability:  Level 5:  Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.  Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instruction in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

Additional Information:  Good project management skills; good organization and time management skills; good oral and written communication skills; must be able to travel 25% of the time including potential global travel; good working knowledge of MS Office applications.


Compensation:  Base Salary plus 25% Bonus based on identified KPI’s.


Store and Outside Sales: Store and Outside Sales positions may have physical requirements that include, but are not limited to: (1) Lifting of items, such as sundries or containers of paint weighting from 5 to 75 pounds (2) Use of electronic equipment including, but not limited to computers, point of sale devices, communication devices (3) Driving a large delivery truck/vehicle (4) Climbing ladders (5) Walking on uneven surfaces, e.g., active construction sites (6) Interactions with customers, both face-to-face and on the telephone (7) Interaction with customers relating to color (8) Standing for long periods of time (9) Use of a respirator
