Overview

Copper is looking for an experienced government grant writer to report on existing grants and apply for new grants, particularly with NYSERDA and DOE .

The role starts as a three month, full-time contract. If it's a good fit on both sides and our grant writing needs continue to grow, there's a real possibility this becomes a permanent, full-time role at the end of the contract.

What you'll do

The first job is getting our NYSERDA reporting finalized. That means working through the existing drafts, addressing the feedback we've gotten back, and making sure each one is ready to submit.

After that, you'll own quarterly reporting on our DOE grant. You'll work from existing scaffolding and prior submissions, check in with us to confirm details, and keep us on schedule.

You'll also help us put together new grant applications as they come up. We have a running list of opportunities and could use someone who can take a kickoff conversation and turn it into a strong first draft.

This will also include working with project managers on the side of the grant management organizations to update on our progress and manage expected deliverables.

Along the way, we'd love your help building up a library of reusable content (company background, technology descriptions, project narratives) that we can pull from for future applications.

What you'll bring

Experience writing or revising government grants, ideally for federal or state energy programs. State energy commission or Departments of Energy, Defense, Health and Human Services, or something similar would be especially helpful, but it isn't a hard requirement.

Comfort working from existing drafts and reviewer feedback. At times you will need to start from a blank page, but you’ll also have pre-existing documentation and clear prompts when you’re asked to create new documents. Other times you’ll need to clean up and finalize some of the content that we already have in place.

A good eye for detail. The reports that come back for revision usually come back for small things, and we'd love someone who catches those before they go out.

Comfort with technical material. You don't need to be an engineer, but you should be willing to ask good questions and learn enough to write clearly about batteries, induction cooking, heat pumps, and how they fit together in a home.

The ability to manage your own time and stay in touch with us as you go. This is a contract role and we'll trust you to keep things moving.

An easy ability to work with people and build relationships with grant program managers and Copper staff.

Location

This is an in-office role that is on site four days per week minimum. Our office is located in Berkeley, CA.

Compensation & Benefits

$131-148,000/year salary ($32,500-37,000 for the 13-week contract term). This is a fixed-term W2 role for three months, full-time. We'll provide scope, source material, and access to the people on our team who can answer questions. We will provide you with a laptop.

At the end of the three months, if things are going well and our grant writing needs continue to grow, there may be a possibility to convert this into a full-time, permanent role with salary, benefits, and equity.

We're hoping to start as soon as we can find the right person.

Equal Employment Opportunity

We are committed to creating an equitable and inclusive environment for all our employees and are seeking to build a team that reflects the diversity of the people we hope to serve with our products. We are proud to be an equal opportunity employer.

About Us

Our first product is Charlie, an induction range with a battery inside that plugs into a standard 120V outlet. We're based in Berkeley, ship across the country, and our mission is to make electrification easier and more accessible for everyone.
