We're a CPaaS company providing scalable infrastructure for real-time communications, from automated phone line testing to large-scale voice and messaging systems. Our platform combines RESTful APIs, dashboards, and backend orchestration layers to help organizations deliver mission-critical communication at scale. We're looking for a Head of Engineering to lead a small, high-performing engineering team reporting directly to our CTO. This is primarily a leadership role: you'll set direction, grow the people around you, run the team's cadence, and build out the team as we grow. You'll stay close enough to the code to contribute where it counts, but leading the team — not writing the most code — is the job.
ResponsibilitiesYour primary focus — leading the team:
- Lead, manage, and grow a small engineering team, including 1:1s, career development, feedback, and performance.
- Own delivery across the frontend and backend, from planning through production support.
- Own the team's workflow and operating cadence, such as sprint planning, release planning, roadmapping, and a regular rhythm of clear priorities and accountability.
- Recruit, interview, and grow the team as we expand, and shape the engineering culture around it.
- Partner with product owners, QA, dev/ops, and stakeholders to translate product goals into well-scoped work.
- Communicate status, risk, and tradeoffs clearly to leadership.
Still required, but not your primary focus — staying close to the work:
- Set and uphold technical direction alongside the team, guiding architecture decisions and long-term maintainability.
- Contribute to design, code reviews, and implementation where it adds the most leverage, and be ready to step in when the team needs it. This is a supporting part of the role, not the main event.
- 8+ years of professional software engineering experience, with at least 2-3 years of leading engineers as a manager, tech lead, or in a comparable role.
- Demonstrated experience building and growing a small engineering team — for example, taking a team from a few engineers to several — including hiring, onboarding, and establishing process and cadence at an early stage.
- A track record of shipping and operating production software with the technical judgement to know which decisions matter.
- Experience building server-side applications in Java and working fluency with Typescript and modern frontend frameworks like React and Angular.
- Strong grasp of the Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC), microservice architecture, and dev/ops best practices.
- Experience with containerized development in Docker.
- Clear communicator that can balance product discussions with leadership, QA, and developers.
- Familiarity with telecom or CPaaS systems (e.g., SMS, SIP, voice calling, etc.)
- Experience with relational database systems (SQL or NoSQL) and messaging systems like Kafka and RabbitMQ.
- Exposure to observability tools like Grafana, Prometheus, and ELK.
- Experience with Agile/Scrum methodologies.
- Working knowledge of secure coding practices and solid understanding of compliance frameworks such as SOC 2.
- Experience integrating AI into development workflows
- Small team, low bureaucracy, and real ownership — you'll have room to lead and make decisions that stick.
- A clear operating rhythm: defined priorities, a regular cadence, and honest, direct communication about what's working and what isn't.
- High accountability paired with strong support — we set clear expectations and back each other to meet them.
- Own the direction of a team building critical infrastructure that powers real-world communication.
- Work on a mature codebase with a modern stack, where your technical decisions have immediate impact.
- Competitive salary and benefits package.
- Flexible work arrangements and supportive team culture.
- Fast-moving, low-bureaucracy environment where you'll have room to lead and grow.
