Overview

Tonal is seeking a Head of Finance to report directly to the CFO and lead the company's integrated Finance & Accounting function. This executive owns FP&A, accounting and controllership, and operational accounting under a single leader, and serves as a strategic thought partner—and proxy—to the CFO across the business. The mandate is to build a finance organization that scales with the business: investing in systems, automation, and capability so the function delivers sharper decision support and takes on greater strategic scope as Tonal grows.

You will own company-wide strategic and long-range planning and enterprise reporting while also overseeing corporate accounting, financial reporting, and the financial processes and systems that underpin a growing, multi-segment business. You will partner cross-functionally with teams such as product, marketing, data science, manufacturing and supply chain, business technology, and engineering on decision support, investment prioritization, internal controls, and business-process reengineering. The role combines analytical depth with executive presence and cross-functional influence, translating complex financial data into clear, decisive guidance for the board, investors, and the leadership team.

Executive Business Partnership
  • Serve as a trusted strategic advisor and proxy to the CFO, CEO, and C-suite on financial planning, performance, and strategy.

  • Lead investment evaluation and prioritization that supports the VP+ population in making informed decisions on headcount, opex, and growth investments.

  • Surface risks and opportunities in cross-functional forums before they become visible in the numbers, fostering data integrity and financial discipline.

Communication & Executive Reporting
  • Own the design and delivery of financial narratives for the Board of Directors, executive team, and investor audiences.

  • Drive the corporate finance calendar and align the organization on forecast cadence, key assumptions, and financial targets.

Strategic Planning, Forecasting & Analysis
  • Own the production and executive delivery of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial presentations, including forecast-to-actual variance analysis and forward-looking insight.

  • Drive the long-range financial plan, annual operating plan, and interim forecasts, grounded in business drivers and scenario modeling, with the agility to reforecast dynamically.

  • Define the company's financial modeling architecture and standards, and stand up driver-based reporting that bridges board summaries and transactional detail.

  • Provide strategic counsel on capital allocation and trade-offs across competing priorities that support sustainable growth.

Accounting, Controllership & Operational Finance
  • Oversee corporate accounting, financial reporting, and operational accounting, ensuring compliance with GAAP and applicable regulatory requirements.

  • Ensure audit readiness and a strong internal-control environment across revenue recognition, inventory accounting, and reserves, with a clean, accelerated monthly close.

  • Build cross-training, documentation, and redundancy on critical processes to eliminate single points of failure and strengthen succession.

System, Automation & Scale
  • Support the systems updates and upgrades that enable channel expansion into healthcare and B2B, in partnership with Business Technology as the technical lead.

  • Drive automation of high-effort manual processes and recurring-entry automation to accelerate the close and reduce operational risk.

  • Champion systems and AI fluency across the team, applying AI-assisted commentary, anomaly detection, and opportunity analysis to reporting and analysis.

Team & Organizational Development
  • Lead, develop, and inspire an established team of functional leaders across FP&A and accounting, fostering a high-performance culture of financial rigor, continuous improvement, and business ownership.

  • Define the organizational roadmap (talent, systems, and processes) in line with business growth, attracting and developing top talent and building a pipeline of future finance leaders.

Who You Are
  • Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, or a related field; MBA strongly preferred.

  • 12+ years of progressive finance and accounting experience spanning both FP&A and accounting/controllership, including senior leadership at the Director / Senior Director level or equivalent.

  • Proven track record of building and scaling high-performing finance teams through periods of significant organizational change and growth.

  • Strong command of FP&A and accounting (revenue recognition, inventory, reserves), financial modeling, scenario analysis, and BI tools.

  • Hands-on experience modernizing finance systems and automating manual processes; comfort applying AI tooling to reporting and analysis.

  • Proven ability to build trust with C-suite members and boards, with the executive presence to influence at the highest levels; operates at both strategic altitude and a detailed level.

Personal Characteristics
  • Strategic, innovative thinker with proven execution, leadership, and communication skills.

  • Highly intellectual—able to think deeply and qualitatively about business problems, breaking down issues and presenting solutions.

  • Persuasive communicator who builds trust with internal and external stakeholders.

  • High level of dedication, urgency, and drive to win, balanced with humility and humor.

Why This Role

This is a rare seat: own all of finance as the CFO's right hand at a category-leading consumer company with a large, loyal, low-churn member base; build the team and systems for Tonal's next phase; and grow your scope as the company does.

We don’t just appreciate differences, we celebrate them, and we always seek people that represent a wide variety of backgrounds. We’re dedicated to adding new perspectives to the team and designing employee experiences that contribute to your growth as much as you do to ours. If your experience aligns with what we’re looking for (even if you don’t check every single box), send us your application. We would love to hear from you!

Tonal is committed to meeting the diverse needs of people with disabilities in a timely manner that is consistent with the principles of independence, dignity, integration, and equality of opportunity. Should you have any accommodation requests, please reach out to us via our confidential email, [email protected].
