Hiring Manager: [Jennifer Smith] - CEO

✨ TL;DR -  Why This Role Matters

At Scribe, recruitment isn’t a support function; it’s one of our most strategic levers. Our edge is our people, and we’re looking for an impact-driven talent leader to build a world-class hiring function.

You’ll own and scale the recruiting function end-to-end, from strategy and systems to candidate experience and employer brand. You’ll be responsible for building the infrastructure that attracts top talent and sets them up to thrive.

You’ll work side by side with our CEO, co-founder, and functional leaders to define what great looks like at Scribe and build the hiring engine that brings it to life.

You might be a recruiting leader with 2+ years of management experience or simply a sharp operator with only business experience and a passion for talent. In every case, you bring conviction, systems thinking, and a bias toward action, and you’re energized by building at the earliest stages of scale.

We’re building a talent destination, a place where exceptional people come to do the best work of their careers.  We will be known as being a top talent magnet, and the team we build is a key part of our long-term legacy.

📌 About the Role

As our Head of Talent, you will:

  • Develop and implement an opinionated point-of-view on what recruiting excellence looks like at Scribe (including processes, funnel metrics, sourcing and closing strategies, interview processes, interview training, use of AI tools, etc)

  • Manage, hire, and scale a high-performing recruiting team (currently 4: [2] technical [1] GTM, and [1] coordination)

  • Own full-cycle recruiting for select high-priority roles yourself

  • Co-own compensation philosophy and competitive banding with Finance and HR

  • Define and execute on a “talent brand” story for Scribe to be known externally as a world-class talent destination (in partnership with leadership)

  • Own hiring prioritization system and team capacity model

  • Act as a culture carrier and bring Scribe’s values into every interaction, internally and externally

  • For candidates with an interest or background in HR, there may be future opportunities to own people-related strategy and expand the role over time

🌎 Location

Our HQ is in beautiful San Francisco, California. This is a hybrid role; we expect you to live in or near San Francisco and work from the office 3 days per week.

🧩 What Makes You a Great Fit
  • Strong people manager, with at least 2 years of people management experience (in operations, talent, people, or another role), including as a hiring manager

  • Proven track record of success in high-growth, fast-moving environments (Series B–E stage startups)

  • Strong, first-principles, data-driven thinker

  • High EQ and exceptional communication skills to build trust at all levels

  • Have strong opinions about how to recruit and manage for a very high talent bar (based on experience as a previous hiring manager and/or in a talent function)

  • Culture-builder who raises the bar on what’s possible

  • Deep belief in the power of talent to shape the trajectory of a fast-growing company

If you’re reading this thinking, “that’s me!”, we want to meet you!

🚫 This Role Is Not for You If
  • You’re looking to inherit a fully built recruiting machine - we’re building

  • You prefer to advise from the sidelines; this is a hands-on, player-coach role

  • You’ve never worked in a fast-paced software or startup environment with high hiring standards

  • You expect compensation to be your primary lever for closing candidates. We compete on mission, impact, and team, not just cash

  • You’re most comfortable in environments where the hiring bar flexes to meet funnel goals. Here, we keep the bar high and focus on better inputs

What you need to know about the San Francisco Tech Scene

San Francisco and the surrounding Bay Area attracts more startup funding than any other region in the world. Home to Stanford University and UC Berkeley, leading VC firms and several of the world’s most valuable companies, the Bay Area is the place to go for anyone looking to make it big in the tech industry. That said, San Francisco has a lot to offer beyond technology thanks to a thriving art and music scene, excellent food and a short drive to several of the country’s most beautiful recreational areas.

Key Facts About San Francisco Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 365,500; 13.9% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Google, Apple, Salesforce, Meta
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, cloud computing, fintech, consumer technology, software
  • Funding Landscape: $50.5 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Sequoia Capital, Andreessen Horowitz, Bessemer Venture Partners, Greylock Partners, Khosla Ventures, Kleiner Perkins
  • Research Centers and Universities: Stanford University; University of California, Berkeley; University of San Francisco; Santa Clara University; Ames Research Center; Center for AI Safety; California Institute for Regenerative Medicine
