About Whop  Whop builds software for internet commerce. Our mission is to help people earn income online by giving creators, solopreneurs, communities, and internet-native businesses the tools to sell digital products, software, access, services, and memberships at scale.

From paid communities and trading tools to SaaS products, educational content, and exclusive access, Whop supports a wide range of online businesses. We are product-focused, customer-oriented, and fast-moving. We focus on building reliable systems, hiring strong people, and supporting the entrepreneurs who rely on us.

The Role  We are seeking a Senior Manager, U.S. Indirect Tax to join our growing Tax Department and help scale our U.S. services and commerce platform. This role will lead sales and use tax strategy across product launches, business initiatives, compliance, audits, and tax operations, while partnering closely with Product, Engineering, Legal, Finance, and Operations.

The role reports directly to the Director of Tax. As an early member of the tax team, you will play a critical role in shaping Whop’s approach to sales and use taxation across existing and emerging business models. You will evaluate complex digital commerce transactions, advise on marketplace facilitator and platform tax issues, support nexus and taxability analyses, and help build scalable processes and systems that support rapid growth.

This position sits at the intersection of tax, technology, and operations, offering a unique opportunity to influence product design, automate tax processes, and establish best-in-class indirect tax practices within a high-growth technology company.

On-site work at the Palo Alto office is currently required on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays.

What You'll Do

Own U.S. sales and use tax compliance

  • Lead U.S. sales and use tax compliance across all applicable state and local jurisdictions, including manage nexus analyses, registrations, return filings, reconciliations, and compliance monitoring.
  • Monitor legislative and regulatory developments and assess their impact on Whop's products, services, and operations.

Lead Product Taxability Analysis

  • Evaluate the sales and use tax treatment of new products, features, services, and business initiatives.
  • Partner with Product, Engineering, and Legal teams throughout the product development lifecycle to ensure tax requirements are considered early and implemented effectively.

Develop and Document Tax Positions

  • Establish, maintain, and periodically review formal sales and use tax position documentation.
  • Ensure tax positions remain aligned with evolving laws, regulations, and business models.
  • Support risk assessments and maintain defensible audit-ready documentation.

Lead Audits and Tax Controversy

  • Manage sales and use tax audits, notices, information requests, and voluntary disclosure initiatives.
  • Coordinate with external advisors and state tax authorities to resolve matters efficiently and effectively.
  • Develop and maintain audit-readiness processes and supporting documentation.

Support Customer Tax Inquiries

  • Serve as a subject matter expert for customer-facing sales and use tax inquiries.
  • Provide timely, accurate guidance regarding product taxability, exemptions, and compliance-related matters.

Drive Process Improvement and Scalability

  • Build and document scalable processes, controls, and governance frameworks that support Whop’s continued growth.
  • Identify opportunities to streamline workflows, reduce risk, and improve operational effectiveness across the indirect tax function.

Who You Are

  • 15+ years of progressive indirect tax experience in public accounting, industry, government, or a combination thereof, with deep expertise in U.S. sales and use tax.
  • Strong technical knowledge of marketplace facilitator laws, digital product taxation, SaaS taxation, payment processing models, and platform-based business structures.
  • Experience supporting indirect tax matters within a technology, fintech, marketplace, SaaS, or e-commerce environment is strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience managing multistate compliance programs, including nexus analysis, registrations, filings, audits, and controversy matters.
  • Experience implementing or managing tax technology and automation solutions.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to balance technical accuracy and practical business considerations.
  • Proven ability to work cross-functionally with Finance, Legal, Product, Engineering, and Operations teams.
  • Comfortable operating in a fast-paced, high-growth environment with significant ownership and autonomy.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to translate complex tax concepts into actionable business guidance.
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Taxation, Finance, or a related field.
  • CPA, MST, JD, LL.M., or equivalent advanced tax credentials preferred.

The base salary for this role is $150,000–$225,000 per year, plus equity, commensurate with experience and qualifications. If you are ready to take ownership of U.S. sales and use tax at a fast-growing company, we would love to hear from you.
