About Clip Automation

Clip Automation (clipautomation.com) is revolutionizing industrial automation and manufacturing operations by connecting equipment, processes, products, and people through an innovative analytics platform that provides real-time visibility and optimization for manufacturing operations teams.

Founded in 2020 by industry experts with 45+ years of experience from companies like Apple and Juul Labs, we aim to make digital transformation accessible to manufacturing organizations. To date, we have raised $1.9M in funding and secured contracts with notable enterprise clients.

Our ClipSuite platform monitors production processes and automatically identifies quality, yield, and equipment availability issues, alerting factory teams in real-time to implement changes. We connect to any station in the manufacturing process, from manual to fully automated, providing a 360-degree view of operations from site to sensor.

The Role

As a Founding Industrial IoT Systems Engineer, you'll join our founding team of 10 to help build and scale our IoT-enabled smart manufacturing platform by architecting, deploying, and maintaining the critical infrastructure that connects factory equipment and systems to our data platform and SCADA. Your primary focus will involve the design of robust data integration pipelines, and implementing connectivity across a variety of industrial protocols including OPC-UA, MQTT, MODBUS, PROFINET, and both Digital and Analog I/O.  You will be at the forefront of industrial IoT and smart factory projects, ensuring data reliability, system security, and operational efficiency.

Core Responsibilities

  • Integrate factory equipment and sensors using protocols such as OPC-UA, MQTT, MODBUS, PROFINET, and Digital/Analog I/O.
  • Architect, deploy, and maintain industrial servers, edge gateways, and networking hardware for reliable connectivity.
  • Build and manage data pipelines to stream equipment and event data from the shop floor to the cloud.
  • Troubleshoot connectivity, protocol translation, and hardware issues to minimize downtime and data loss.
  • Ensure secure and reliable data handoff between factory systems and analytics platforms in collaboration with software, data, and customer engineering teams.
  • Implement best practices for industrial cybersecurity, backups, and disaster recovery.
  • Partner with customer manufacturing and IT teams to design and deliver tailored integration solutions.
  • Configure, document, and monitor secure network communications for industrial data exchange.
  • Lead pilot deployments, testing, and commissioning of new smart factory integrations.
  • Stay current with emerging trends in IIoT, smart manufacturing, and automation.

Required Qualifications

  • 5+ years in manufacturing controls, automation, or industrial systems integration
  • Hands-on experience with industrial protocols (OPC-UA, MQTT, MODBUS, PROFINET) and Digital/Analog I/O
  • Knowledge of programming languages (Python, Java, C, or C++)
  • Experience deploying and maintaining industrial networking equipment, servers, and gateways in production environments
  • Working knowledge of PLCs, sensors, SCADA, and on-premises factory automation solutions
  • Strong troubleshooting and analytical skills across hardware, software, and communications systems
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Industrial Automation, Computer Engineering, or equivalent practical experience
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, especially with factory floor and IT personnel

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience as an early engineer at a startup
  • Strong programming skills in Python, C, or C++ (or similar languages)
  • Prior experience implementing IIoT architectures, edge computing, or smart manufacturing systems
  • Familiarity with cloud-based IoT/data integration platforms (AWS IoT, Azure IoT, Google Cloud IoT)
  • Knowledge of industrial cybersecurity, system backups, and disaster recovery best practices

What We're Looking For

We need a driven, versatile and hands-on Industrial IoT engineer who thrives in the fast-paced, technical environment of an early-stage startup, who is passionate about modernizing manufacturing systems, and is eager to solve integration challenges at the intersection of OT and IT. You should be comfortable wearing multiple hats, making key architectural decisions, and working closely with customers to understand their needs. You'll be a founding team member helping to shape our product and technical direction.

What We Offer

  • Competitive salary and equity package (100K-180K+)
  • Opportunity to build and scale next-generation IIoT and automation infrastructure as part of a founding engineering team
  • Work with cutting-edge technologies in IoT, real-time data processing, and cloud computing
  • Exposure to cutting-edge technologies in manufacturing data integration, smart factories, and IIot
  • Remote-friendly work environment with flexible hours
  • Health, dental, and vision insurance
  • Professional development opportunities

Location

This position is based in the United States, with preference for candidates located near offices in Dallas, TX or Palo Alto, CA.

Clip Automation is an equal opportunity employer. We celebrate diversity and are committed to creating an inclusive environment for all employees.
