About the role:

The Internal Audit (IA) team is a firewalled team within GiveDirectly that exists to support the organisation in delivering millions of dollars to recipients safely. Specifically, the IA team is mandated to conduct field assessments to surface and investigate field-based risks, among the communities where we deliver cash. The IA team is responsible for assessing and identifying design gaps in our operations that have the potential to expose our recipients to harm, abuse and fraud. The team ensures that we are able to deliver cash safely to recipients by designing innovations for the prevention, detection, investigation and mitigation of risks that are both internal and external to GD.

GiveDirectly is seeking an experienced Internal Audit Program Manager to prevent, detect, and mitigate field-based risks associated with delivering cash transfers to thousands of households across a portfolio of countries. You will partner with the IA Director and Country Directors to design and implement risk management strategies, lead investigations, and manage a high-performing audit team.

What You’ll DoProject Design (25%)
  • Represent IA in country project design conversations, including development of risk management measures
  • Own development of project-specific IA proposals (audit rates, approaches) and risk registers for all new and ongoing projects
  • Oversee community risk scoping exercises and review implementation tools to strengthen risk detection and prevention
Risk Monitoring & Systems (45%)
  • Own and monitor IA metrics and KPIs across your country portfolio; lead correction of missed or declining targets
  • Hold regular meetings with Country Directors; lead escalation protocols and transparent investigation of high-risk cases
  • Monitor fraud reporting trends; flag high-risk countries and projects to the CD and IA Director
  • Build in-country relationships with fraud management stakeholders (e.g. telcos) for sustainable fraud resolution
  • Conduct spot checks on programs and IA operations; write quarterly productivity reports and project retrospectives
  • Support tech-related fraud prevention innovations and identify new ways to detect and reduce fraud
People Management (10%)
  • Directly manage Internal Audit Managers across your assigned countries; conduct regular check-ins and quarterly performance reviews
  • Lead hiring of IAMs; conduct skip-level meetings with AFMs and support their development
  • Build a team culture rooted in critical thinking, accountability, and ethical behavior
  • Conduct career growth assessments and coordinate with HR on professional development
Culture & Compliance (10%)
  • Champion GiveDirectly’s Recipients First value and uphold the Code of Conduct across all operations
  • Identify sub-cultures that may create safeguarding or fraud risks; conduct annual fraud and safeguarding training for country Programs teams
Other (10%)
  • Support the IA Director and SM in evolving global IA strategy and leveraging AI and technology for fraud risk management
  • Participate in weekly IA management meetings; support external audits and cross-portfolio work as needed
  • Proactively identify opportunities to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of IA operations
What We’re Looking For
  • Proven experience in internal audit, risk management, or fraud investigation, ideally in complex field-based environments
  • Strong analytical and systems-thinking skills — you use data to diagnose risk, generate insights, and drive decisions
  • Experienced people manager who builds high-performing, values-driven teams across multiple countries or geographies
  • Clear, direct communicator who can influence senior stakeholders and navigate cross-functional complexity
  • Structured problem-solver who thrives in ambiguous, high-stakes contexts and follows through on commitments
  • Technically fluent — comfortable with data tools, dashboards, and excited to apply AI and automation to audit and fraud prevention
  • Motivated by GiveDirectly’s mission and committed to putting recipients first in all decisions
What Success Looks Like in 12–18 Months
  • Clear risk monitoring systems and KPIs in place across your country portfolio, with consistent reporting to leadership
  • All countries in portfolio have up-to-date risk registers and IA workplans; spot checks completed on schedule
  • IAMs are well-supported, performing strongly, and developing professionally
  • Escalation protocols are in place and followed; high-risk cases are investigated transparently and resolved efficiently
  • At least one meaningful improvement to IA systems, tools, or processes driven by your initiative
