POSITION OVERVIEW

We are seeking a highly skilled and technically driven Lead Design Engineer (P.E. Required) to join our engineering team. This role is central to delivering advanced seismic bracing designs, leading technical coordination, and supporting the development of custom engineering solutions for complex construction projects. The ideal candidate will bring deep engineering expertise, the ability to independently manage technically challenging assignments, and a strong commitment to accuracy, communication, and industry-leading performance.

As a senior technical resource within the Capitol Projects Group, you will oversee critical engineering deliverables—including seismic bracing layouts, point load calculations, submittal packages, and 3D modeling coordination—while ensuring all work aligns with ISAT design standards and applicable building codes. You will also mentor junior engineers, support quoting and billing processes, and contribute to improving engineering workflows, tools, and methodologies across the department.

This role requires an engineer with advanced knowledge of seismic design for non-structural components, strong AutoCAD-based skills, and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment.

A Bachelor’s degree in Engineering and an active Professional Engineer (P.E.) license are required for this position.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Communication:

  • Prepare project technical communication including transmittals, coordination summaries, and follow-up correspondence through email and our project database, NEXUS.
  • Document all communication electronically in project folders and copy the Mentor PM as needed in NEXUS.

Project File Management

  • Maintain organized and accurate project files accessible to all project personnel.
  • Ensure file structures comply with company standards.

Submittals

  • Build complete submittal packages using provided project data.
  • Prepare both hard-copy and digital PDF submittals.

Legends

  • Create bracing legends for all trades and configurations, including CBC, IBC, and UFC code formats.
  • Seismic Bracing Layouts
  • Independently generate seismic bracing layouts based on ISAT Manual requirements, with minimal oversight.

Kit Takeoff Counts

  • Perform kit takeoffs, including accurate counts, nomenclature, and kit IDs for quoting or ordering materials.
  • 3D Modeling & Coordination (Basic to Competent)
  • Model seismic systems using AutoCAD and coordinate using Navisworks.

Point Loads

  • Apply point load charts and compute vertical dead loads and seismic loads.
  • Produce coordinated point load layouts for submittal to the SEOR.
  • Expected rate:
    • Dead loads: 0.2–0.8 loads/min
    • Seismic loads: 0.5–1.0 loads/min

Software Programs

  • Demonstrate basic proficiency or ability to develop competency in:
    • AutoCAD
    • Revit
    • Navisworks
    • Bluebeam
    • RISA-3D
    • Enercalc
    • MathCAD

Custom Engineering Leadership

  • Serve as a senior technical resource for the Capitol Projects Group
  • Provide guidance in specialized engineering applications such as vibration isolation, pipe stress, thermal analysis or seismic design.
  • Mentor junior engineers as needed.

Generate Quotes

  • Lead technical support for quoting activities with Sales and Branch PMs.
  • Assist in defining scope, evaluating design requirements, and advising on cost impacts.

Billing (Advanced)

  • Manage engineering billing tasks, ensuring alignment with purchase orders and billing policies.
