About Descript

Descript’s vision is to put video in every communicator’s toolkit. Back in the day, you needed like six monitors and a Bachelor’s degree to edit a video. Descript lets you do it by editing docs and slides, and increasingly by just asking AI. In the future, maybe you won’t even need to ask! Our goal is to make video editing easy enough for everyone on your team, and powerful enough for your video team. But building a new way to record or generate videos that look and sound good comes with a series of unique design, technology, and business challenges. In other words, we need really good product managers.

About the role

As a Lead Growth Product Manager, you’ll be responsible for identifying, testing, and scaling the product experiences that drive user acquisition, activation, retention, and monetization for both Descript’s self-serve as well as enterprise product. We’re a small, flat team, and you’ll have the chance to work closely with world-class PMs, engineers, designers, researchers, data scientists, and product marketers — all driven to do the best work of their careers while moving the metrics that matter most.

What you’ll do
  • Define and own the growth strategy and roadmap for both our self-serve and enterprise product.
  • Develop a deep understanding of our customers, market, and growth levers across the full user lifecycle, from discovery and onboarding to conversion and expansion to long-term retention.
  • Partner closely with design, engineering, data, sales and marketing to lead experiments and strategic initiatives that meaningfully impact acquisition, activation, engagement, and retention.
  • Analyze user behavior, funnel performance, and A/B test results to improve conversion & upgrade funnels, expand usage, and evolve pricing & packaging to meet diverse user needs.
  • Drive company-wide growth initiatives that balance customer value with sustainable business impact.
Who you are
  • You’ve shipped impactful things: You have 7+ years of product management experience, with at least a few in growth-focused roles. You’ve worked on products with technical complexity, high design craft, and measurable growth impact — experience with products that have dual self-serve and enterprise growth motions is ideal. You excel at driving cross-functional teams to deliver complex initiatives.
  • You start with the customer and the data: You care deeply about understanding customers and have a proven track record of turning insights into growth strategies. You’ve led discovery work, defined features, and run experiments that solve real problems and move key metrics.
  • You’re a fog sculptor: Many of our growth opportunities don’t have obvious playbooks or direct competitors. You thrive in ambiguity, shaping unformed ideas into clear strategies and repeatable wins. You’re highly self-directed and aren’t easily blocked.
  • You care about craft and impact: You balance high-quality product experiences with a relentless focus on measurable outcomes. You know that the most delightful growth loops are the ones that feel effortless to the user.
  • You’re creative and maybe kind of weird: Ok, this isn’t a hard requirement, but Descript is a quirky place, and the people who thrive here tend to like that. A good sense of humor goes a long way — after all, we’re building creative tools, not launching rockets.

The base salary range for this role is $200,000 - $255,000/year. Final offer amounts will carefully consider multiple factors, including prior experience, expertise, and location, and may vary from the amount above.

About Descript

Descript is building a simple, intuitive, fully-powered editing tool for video and audio — an editing tool built for the age of AI. We are a team of 150 and the backing of some of the world's greatest investors (OpenAI, Andreessen Horowitz, Redpoint Ventures, Spark Capital).

Descript is the special company that's in possession of both product market fit and the raw materials (passionate user community, great product, large market) for growth, but is still early enough that each new employee has a measurable influence on the direction of the company.

Benefits include a generous healthcare package, 401k matching program, catered lunches, and flexible vacation time. Our headquarters are located in the Mission District of San Francisco, CA. We're hiring for a mix of remote roles and hybrid roles.  For those who are remote, we have a handful of opportunities throughout the year for in person collaboration.  For our hybrid roles, we're flexible, and you're an adult—we don't expect or mandate that you're in the office every day. We do believe there are valuable and serendipitous moments of discovery and collaboration that come from working together in person.

Descript is an equal opportunity workplace—we are dedicated to equal employment opportunities regardless of race, color, ancestry, religion, sex, national origin, sexual orientation, age, citizenship, marital status, disability, gender identity, or Veteran status. We believe in actively building a team rich in diverse backgrounds, experiences, and opinions to better allow our employees, products, and community to thrive.

What you need to know about the San Francisco Tech Scene

San Francisco and the surrounding Bay Area attracts more startup funding than any other region in the world. Home to Stanford University and UC Berkeley, leading VC firms and several of the world’s most valuable companies, the Bay Area is the place to go for anyone looking to make it big in the tech industry. That said, San Francisco has a lot to offer beyond technology thanks to a thriving art and music scene, excellent food and a short drive to several of the country’s most beautiful recreational areas.

Key Facts About San Francisco Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 365,500; 13.9% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Google, Apple, Salesforce, Meta
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, cloud computing, fintech, consumer technology, software
  • Funding Landscape: $50.5 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Sequoia Capital, Andreessen Horowitz, Bessemer Venture Partners, Greylock Partners, Khosla Ventures, Kleiner Perkins
  • Research Centers and Universities: Stanford University; University of California, Berkeley; University of San Francisco; Santa Clara University; Ames Research Center; Center for AI Safety; California Institute for Regenerative Medicine
